View Full Version : My kittens won't use their new condo/tree
Why is it that we can no longer delete a post?
Aww, I wanted to hear about the kittens.

Oh, you're sweet! I posted a long message about my kittens and their new tree and realized I was basically procrastinating and using it as an excuse to be online. :|(
But the gist of it is that the kittens have decided that they much prefer to use the dog beds rather than the tree, much to the dismay of the dogs, especially the boxer. It's so funny to see her whimpering at them to get out of her bed and them ignoring her completely. :)
Put some catnip on the cat tree - they will love it! :)

It's my experience that cats will do what they will--there's a reason people talk about "herding cats." One of their (many) charming characteristics is that they aren't servile creatures who live to please humans. I like that about them. Buy lots of dog beds. :D
I sank some bank on a vertical scratching post/perch for my fur-dictator who would not. use. it. at. all. Then I read an article which said some cats prefer scratching on flat surfaces while others prefer vertical. My luck.
Hmm maybe put a dog bed on top of the tree...like a treehouse!

I've seen the delete on postings done in response to a thread, but could not access it on the new thread itself. Even before anyone responded to it. It seems that if no one has responded we should be able to delete it, for those times we realize our thread is not necessary or useful.

Yes, after I bought it, I read up on a bunch of people whose cats didn't use them either. But you won't know till you try it, unfortunately.

Haha! It would make for an expensive treehouse though. :)

Well, since I feed them premium food on demand and pick up their poop daily, some effort on their part would be appreciated. Even if they're faking it! Although to be honest, the kittens are very social and affectionate.
But you're right, I'm going to buy some more dog beds and make life easy and simple. Ironically, they prefer the oldest dog beds which have lots of doggy scent on it. I believe they think they're dogs. They're adorable trailing after the dogs and snuggling up with them. I love my little pack.
I have two five foot tall carpeted cat trees. Two of my bunch run up and down. Previous cats loved to sleep on various levels. One cat never has used it. They mostly like it to look out of our fairly high windows.
Note one cat has a very weak hindend and taught himself to use the carpeted ladder to get up and down.
Each of my cats are very different.
It's good to be bipetual! :laff:
Miley Cyrus is pansexual and I'm bipetual...>8)... you learn something new everyday.:D

My cat takes over the human bed. It's amazing to see how much room one cat can take up when she really wants to.
Don't give up on the cat tree. Your kittens may not like it now, but they may love it as cats.
When I first bought ours, the cats looked at it. We would place each of them in the top a few times a day. Once it was familiar, they starting using it, playing on it etc.
You just may need to help them for a bit;)
Keep in mind that cats often like "high" places because it allows them to get away from perceived threats (people, dogs, etc.). If they are bonding to your dogs and becoming part of the dog-pack, they may never feel the need to "escape" the dogs. Two of my three cats like high places, but they both came to me past kitten-hood. The other cat, who we raised from 8 weeks of age, believes he is a dog. He comes when called, goes outside in the fenced yard with the dogs to relieve himself, and is extremely affectionate in a very dog-like way.
But, I agree with the other poster that it might just take time. I suspect they'll become more interested in climbing up and sleeping in the kitty condo as they get older.
