View Full Version : Anyone else like moving?

I'm starting to get antsy. I've lived in my current place for 6 months now. I said I'd stay another 12 months (to the next end of lease that my housemate signed). It's a bit much for me. Maybe I'll plan to stay only for 12 months max next time.

I really like my housemates (good friends with one - we do lots of stuff together, the other 2 I hardly ever see), the actual house, and the price. But the location is less than ideal. I'd prefer to be a bit closer to downtown.
But the main thing is I like novelty. I walk almost everywhere and there are only so many walks when the start and/or destination is the same place. I need some new walks and I'm too cheap to bus to another area and walk from there, that often.

And the walk from my house to office is basically a straight line, so I have to walk on the same road every day or it will take a lot longer, and it's through an area that's a bit rough. I didn't walk to work on Sunday/Monday as there were too few people around and it felt unsafe.

Plus I got rid of most of my stuff so that will make moving easier. I'll get rid of a bit more during/after the next move.

So do you get sick of the same scenery over and over? Do you move often or are you stuck where you are? I know many people hate moving, but I like change.

I go back and forth on this. But I think most people dislike moving because they have a lot of stuff to move and usually on their own, or with paid help. And none of that is very inspiring! haha

As a fellow "extreme" minimalist I am not daunted by the physical act of moving. I can do it in an afternoon without any chaos, really. Even my last move, which was last-minute and frantic was just four or five carloads with only one person helping me.

Part of me wants to move to a cool place, settle in, and get to know my community -- build community.

Another part of me thinks: "I have moved around so much I might as well face facts: This is just how my life is."

Yet another part thinks: "Yeah! I want to move to Montana or Vermont or Florida!"

As much as I want to build local community, I also feel that my "community" is online/throughout N. America. Several of my best friends don't live near me at all and I'd love to be able to visit them more and really explore that area for a while. Especially over on the MMM forums there are lots of local groups for each city/area. I'd love to travel around and just meet up with like-minded people who I originally met online. It's funny how people can live so close to you, but you meet them online first. Met 2 new local friends that way. It was funny - one of them told me they'd almost met the other first at the MMM meet-up in Ecuador, even though they live in the same city normally.

Gotcha. I suppose I am old fashioned. I like meeting with people in-person.

Hence the van-plan. Meet them online, stalk them in person.

Me too! (of course, my three kids that live there are a part of the draw for me, but it's an awesome town. I'll be there next week at my new DIL's bridal shower)

When I was younger I loved to move to a new state/city. I found it very exciting. Now I want to stay in one place, have good friends & build community which I have done the past 18 years. I would never leave this town now.

I'd like to be able to bike to the lake and go fishing! Dreamy dream life right there! Oh... but how to make a living there...?

Well, my 3 kids were able to find dream jobs there. Why not you?

Uh... I can't do math. :/

But more to the point, what do they do for work there? Tell me more what you like about the town. What do they like about it? Pros? Cons?

I have to admit--they were REALLY lucky. What happens in Burlington, from what I understand, is.. people graduate from UVM, and then fall into the proverbial "Burlington trap"--they've come to love Burlington so much that even though they have Master's degrees from UVM, they wind up waiting tables just because they love Burlington!

It's progressive, beautiful, easy to get around, friendly, etc. I think it consistently winds up on the "Healthiest Towns in the US" list. They are very community-minded--there's Intervale (http://www.intervale.org), City Market (https://www.citymarket.coop), Church Street, Lake Champlain. Bernie Sanders had a hand in the Burlington Land Trust, which is a model for providing affordable home ownership to its citizens (my son owns a home through the Land Trust and has a picture of Bernie Sanders in his home!).

My first son to move there got his masters in History from UVM and was committed to the community college model--he was SO LUCKY to get a job at XXXXX and has been there for about 7 years now. My other son is a musician. I remember when he was moving there he said that we would LOVE to work at a particular restaurant there, and he got a job, right there! My DD is a graphic designer, freelance for the most part, but she just got a 20-hr a week job at XXXX, and she also does the graphic design for the XXXX, which is an awesome community event. The 20 hours allows her to do other freelance projects and have fun.

None of my kids had cars for years up there--my son is "inheriting" his fiancee's car when they get married (I'm thinking). My daughter purchased a car from her boyfriend's mother for $1000, and my other son still walks to work. You can do that in Burlington.

But I have to admit, it's not as cheap as other VT towns. That's the ONLY downside.

Oh, and it's cold.

Hmmmm... I wonder if there is a place for an unremarkable workin' man like me there in Burlington...

I have to say it sounds exactly like the kind of place I want to live.

MANY people there "work to live" in an unremarkable way in VT. That's what I love about it. Can you wait tables?

Edited to add: I'm xx'ing out the names of the places I've mentioned now that you've seen it, to prevent searches leading to the post/breaching anonymity of my kids. If you don't mind deleting the quote, I'd appreciate it!

Did I delete the right quote?

I could probably wait tables for a minute. But I am an introvert, so that is not long term. :/

Perhaps there is some other regular work I could do there...

Thank you! That works.

Burlington is "Vermont's Biggest Little City" so I bet you could find something you could do there.

Vermont. That's where I'll go if I move.

me, too. I love Burlington and have wanted to live there for a long time, it never panned out. But when my parents are gone, I may just hightail it up there. I have wonderful friends there. My dad is helping me and my mom so much, I can't bail on him after she dies. I owe him the care he is giving me.

I love hearing about free floaters and wondering if I would like that. Part of why I was not like that is because I wanted to establish equity in my townhouse and pay off the mortgage faster. This last move, I did not like. I was fine with selling the townhouse, a little nostalgic but fine. I super-purged and that felt good. And I liked the home we would be sharing. I did not like helping a hoarder pack. I've probably said this but they had the biggest dumpster you can rent and filled it twice. My mostly bed bound, terminally ill mother happened to be found one day trying to climb a ladder to get stuff out of the dumpster. Apparently with no plan of how she would ever get out of this dumpster many feet taller than her. I kinda lost it, she was so unsafe, she knew it, and tried to do it anyway. With this memory loss thing, I actually do not remember at all the day we moved in, none of it. don't remember the movers, directing where things should go, none of it. Probably a good thing, lol because I am sure a certain 4' 11" woman drove everyone nuts! It was probably so bad, my memory is protecting me from remembering it! There is so much crap in our basement and in her room, I cannot fathom that they filled those two dumpsters yet still have all this shit!

So I kind of like moving, starting over in a new place, making it your own, meeting new neighbors, etc. I will never, ever help a hoarder pack again, however.

Lol. Is Burlington on Everybody's list then? Maybe we could start a little sub-community and employ each other.

I have very mixed feelings about moving. I've moved four times in ten years and each time the things I thought were waiting at the other end, weren't. You know, wherever you go, there you are. ;) Moving with lots of stuff and other people seems to equal about a year of post-transplant chaos, which is getting very, very old. But still ... I'd like to try it one more time and get it right.

I'm at the 2 yr post-transplant chaos mark. There are really not many benefits to getting sick, but there are 3 I can think of. It's so hard to get down to the basement, I rarely do it so I do not see the crap everywhere every day. My mom and I are pretty settled that after decades of trying to help her, we do not work well together. But I would feel obligated if I was well, this way her sister and friends are helping her and that's better for everyone involved. And lastly, I forget so much, her hoarding is not on my list of things I hope I never forget. I would love to wipe that slate clean, lol.

I did go down to the basement yesterday with my dad's help, there's just so much stuff I remember having but cannot find. Like the contents of my garage. Linens, toiletries I had stockpiled. Since I don't remember, he swears my house and garage were totally empty. It's weird. It was big stuff, too, like a patio umbrella, how do you lose that? The basement is filled with crap but pretty sure I could spot a huge umbrella! I thought I would just bring some things upstairs and not look around, the last time I organized my part of the basement, all of my things were in one spot. OMG, they've made it a nightmare, for some reason, all my stuff is scattered. Why? Why mess with the one area that was organized? I won't say a word because my dad has helped me so much and if I ask my mom why it's like that, she will cry. ugh!

Kib, are any of your housemates difficult to deal with, like a hoarder?

Moving, My signature on everything is Gypsy for a reason. Looking back how and why did this happen I ask myself. Parents never moved, so I had no history of this pack unpack life. Reasons I have come up with for the 29 moves (many more if you toss in where Hubby has rented while away at work) since 1980:
Youth and fun/excitement
The best place was out here somewhere
Mistake of where we moved
The housing boom and money to be made (that one was a whirlwind of moving)
WORK location and Husband's next position is the number one reason

I have been in this home the longest ever 6 years this month. During this time we sold an other home, bought another home, sold that home, husband has had three rentals in two other states, closed up home and moved to another state came back, this house was almost sold once and we backed out of sale, probably going up for sale int he next two months. I have had every emotion on moving in my life, happy to crying terribly. I look at people who have been set in their home forever and think wow how wonderful then my thoughts flip and I think how boring.

What all this did to me, was I have no long term friends or really close ties and that bothered me for years, it does not now bother me much. Yes the world is smaller now thanks to all the ways to communicate vs the old days when it was phone or letters. Yet for me I found that after a time period away not much is left in common with the neighbors I had. While in TN the last year there I met a very nice neighbor lady, we walked dogs every morning and just talked. I have been gone from there 6 months now and we still email, but not much to say anymore. That is how it always goes with me.

more than 29 moves? You must have it down to a science packing-wise. It does get boring being in one place but there are good parts, as well.

Sadly I can write the book on the topic. I know the good and the bad. First thing I do when I move is find the Hospital and Urgent Care. I learned the top things on the pile to pack are soap, towel, toilet paper and if needed a shower curtain. Nothing worse then getting to the new place and OOPS needing those things asap ;)
