View Full Version : Sugar cold
I try to be aware of how much sugar I consume and I'll go in cycles - cut back dramatically for a while, but then fall back into bad habits. I'm back to too much sugar eating and need to stop again.
And I need to track my eating and how I feel the next day more.
This is the second time I've noticed that the day after lots of sugar I've felt as if I'm getting a cold.
It's kind of like a hangover (though I've never had a hangover as alcohol makes me too sick to drink enough to get one). I wake up fairly miserable with kind of a headache. It's really bad for my productivity.
I wonder how many times I thought I was getting a cold was because of sugar? I rarely actually get sick, and even less so since I quit my job, so it makes sense that it's a diet thing.
Anyone else experience the negative affects of sugar like this?
It's hard because there's a delayed reaction. If I have gluten I know it almost immediately and the reaction is much more severe, so it's really easy to avoid. Not so with sugar, so I have to be more cognizant.
I notice my arthritis flares up if I eat too much sugar. It is a terrible addiction!
I've always thought that alcoholics and sugar addicts are very similar. I feel lucky I missed the alcohol gene, but seem to have a sugar gene....
There was a study out of Loma Linda some years ago that suggested sugar compromises the immune system. This article addresses that and other perils of caloric sweeteners:

I've always heard that it incapacitates some of the white blood cells for awhile.
I don't get stuffy after eating it (I do get stuffy after milk/ice cream.) BUT.......I've noticed that I can get very angry a short time after I've eaten it. Isn't that weird? Maybe it's because of possible precipitous drop in blood sugar a little later.
Our primitive bodies are so attracted to it, because long ago it meant survival. I definitely have an addiction to it, and have to constantly struggle with it.
Maybe your stuffiness was more from a little dehydration......which a lot of sweets can cause because of an osmotic effect.
Why do I do this to myself? I was doing so well with all my walking and now I've screwed up my health with my gluttony. More sick today but I try not to take sick days as when I'm self employed if I have a client or a project due I still have to do it. Have to get used to working sick. And hard tests in two days - need last minute studying.
Kestra, Take a short nap and drink lots of water...might help.

Oh yes, I find the tons of liquids helps clear things up quicker.

Thanks! I really have nothing to gripe over, but all you forum people are my faux-coworkers during the day, so you get to hear my minor annoyances. Yesterday I spilled coffee on my laptop - urgh - stupid me. Luckily I have back-ups for tech and documents. My computer might survive it. Leaving it off for a few days.

I noticed that when I ate lots of sugar and desserts that my belly would get really big. I wonder if there was a connection...
How about "fauxworkers"?
I love it. Very apropos, especially for myself, as I don't feel that studying is real work. Next week I'll be back doing work-like activities.
I think some of us are just metabolically wired to crave sweets. DH doesn't really care for them. I have NO concept what that feels like. And sugar begets sugar.
I can eat healthily for a long time, then think "oh....I can handle one brownie...".......and right after that ONE brownie, I fall off the wagon and get dragged for miles and miles.
Try not to be too hard on yourself Kestra. Drink lots of water and maybe do some short, but intense physical work. I think that will help some.

I think I am wired to crave hot & spicy foods! So I can believe it about sugary stuff too.
I have had friends who lust for salty foods too.
