View Full Version : "Growing A Greener World"
Stumbled across a program of homesteading how-to's that looked interesting. Gardening, chickens, composting, canning etc.

There is a lot of information to glean from that link. I'll have to spend more time checking everything out. :thankyou:

In 1975 PBS aired the first episode of "Croketts victory Garden". I was 15 turning 16 and I still have the companion books that went with the series. Because of my grandfathers love of gardening and homesteading which he shared with his family, I enjoy a lifelong interest in self sufficiency. Growing a Greener World is therefore nostalgic to me but to others may be looking forward. In any case, my point is, PBS has been airing valuable programming like this for at least 40 years.
Other things that happened in 1975...
The fall of Saigon and the surrender of S. Vietnam thus the end of the Vietnam War.
A US submarine releases radioactive coolant into the water at Guam.
Microsoft is born.
Ronald Reagan runs for President.
Gerald Ford escapes assassination twice.
the Edmund Fitzgerald sinks off whitefish bay.
Patricia Hurst is captured.
President Ford pardons Confederate General Robert E. lee posthumously.
The trans Alaskan pipeline construction begins.

Nice trip down memory lane! I do remember it well.
I find it interesting that your grandfather had such a big influence on your interest in self-sufficiency. I'm very much a late bloomer to the gardening thing (excuse the pun), but since my permaculture class in 2012, I've been experimenting with and slowly growing sustainable practices in my backyard, and I now have two raised beds, one flat garden bed, one herb garden and pollinator sanctuary and a rain barrel. I hope to continue to "grow into" my permaculture design for the yard, which include fruit trees, grape arbors, and nuts and berries. I also have ideas for solar lamps/clothesline and replacement of our current fire pit/benches with something more permanent and well-integrated into the yard.
I now have a grandson, and I hope that he will be receptive to some of these ideas, as I continue to learn while he grows.

Catherine,
I have some encouraging words for you. You will be a wonderfully positive influence on your grandson because you model what is important in life. He will see what you care about and will absorb those values for his lifetime.
Gardening was a way of life for me growing up. We had one, my grandparents fed us from one and sold roadside vegetables, my uncles and aunts all had a garden. My uncle was the Superintendant of the Monongehela National Forest in West Virginia. He taught me birdwatching and banding and beekeeping. As a teenager I devoured gardening books from the library and to this day I have a few old Rodale Press resource books.
I attended Penn State University in the agriculture college because of these influences. Then, I spent a career in law enforcement but managed to still keep my hands in the ground with a small garden. Even though I was working in a career well removed from the land, I retained my love of it so that when I retired I rekindled those interests. That has been forty years and all my mentors save my mother are long gone.
I have passed this all on to my three children and in that way, I honor them all.
