View Full Version : Roll up garage door problems Help!
My electric roll up garage door is about a year old with no problems until the last month. I now have to push the button twice to get it to roll up whether from the car or the control inside the garage. When I push the button for roll down, often it will promptly roll up again. I changed the battery in the control in the car; I cleaned the area around the two monitors that create the beam and under the garage door itself thinking dust or cobwebs might be a problem. It still keeps happening. :help:
I did google looking for solutions and just got a lot of ads instead and youtubes on how how to install.

I am experiencing the same exact problems!
My housemates (sis and BIL) use the garage mostly for storage and put stuff in their through the door-to-house and not the garage door. So they do not experience this annoyance with the door. They don't believe me either! haha
Garage door openers are funny sometimes and difficult to troubleshoot. I'll operate on the assumption that the transmitter in your car is wireless and the control pad in the garage is wired to the operator, although it may be wireless as well. If it takes multiple clicks on different wireless transmitters to open the garage, I'd say it's a problem with the receiver on the operator, possibly with the antenna. If it happens with a wired control pad, I'd think it may be a low voltage problem caused by a nick in the wire or an extremely long wire run.
The reversal when closing seems more like a safety problem, either in the beam or perhaps there's a resistance safety incorporated into the motor or pressure sensor in the bottom of the door.
Or, maybe I'm overthinking it. If you know a curious handyperson I'd challenge them to figure it out. ~
Thanks. Will try to see if there is any other possible spider web etc.., that may be triggering the issues. I will find a neighbour who is more knowledgeable than I am about such things.

The beams/sensors on our garage door are very sensitive to minute changes in height off the ground and angle toward each other. 9 times out of 10 when we have a problem with the door not going up or down (usually down) consistently, we just tweak the position of each beam/sensor a little and it's fine.
It might also be worth it to take apart the opener remote you use and make sure there's nothing inside either gumming it up or shorting it, and replacing the battery if there's any question as to its worthiness.
Update.
For those who have a similar problem at some point, my DSIL came up with the solution today. He used the ladder to closely watch the motor hanging in the ceiling as I ran the controls. Turns out that if you hold down a special switch and then watch the lights that come on, it will tell you where the problem is occurring. In my case, the door came down too hard and then popped back up again triggered by a safety switch. He eased up the pressure on the door and the problem cleared. He also oiled the little rollers and the door works like a charm and much more quietly. I was also hitting the wrong button of three which he was advised as he watched the light indicators. I gave hime a very grateful hug.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
