I've worked just part-time since '95. Well, some of those years I stayed home with raising kids, plus we had our own business and you know that is always more than full-time. The past 10 years I've worked part-time running our church facility. I've been offered a full-time Activities Director position which would get me back into my degree field. It's a huge decision for me to go full-time again but now that both boys are in college it's probably a good idea for me to spend some years working and building a retirement account.

Hi Float On. Is the new job still at the same church? Are you leaning towards taking it?

It's at a different facility. My heart is leaning towards it but it sure is hard to give up my very flexible schedule I have now.

I guess I would consider where you are financially. If you need more for retirement, helping with college, etc., then maybe you should consider it for a couple years. But if you're happy with things now, then stay with the part-time/flexible job.
(I know, that's exactly the dilemma, right?) I'm sure you've also thought about the things you might accomplish around your house and just having some free time, since your kids are in college. How long would the job be open to you for? What would the benefits be? (sick, vacation, health).

i would really consider it also, for me it would also be about a new challenge and something to change things up now that kids are moved to college. Maybe that is not a common thing but i spent so many years focusing on family that i want to stretch myself in a more career direction.

it sounds similar to some of the work i do so it would be great to chat about programming and all that, what age range or community would you be serving.

Well, I ended up saying no to this offer, it was for an activities director for an assisted living center. I guess I just really don't want to be tied to a full-time job as much as I know I should I just don't want to give up my freedom. But in other news, I did accept another small part-time job just 2 shifts a week through the city parks and rec dept so that sort of gets me back to my roots of my recreation degree. One cool perk is that I get a free membership to the fitness center in the Rec Plex.

I think you made a wise decision. If you can afford to have flexibility, there is no better way to live....free membership to the fitness center is icing on the cake!
