View Full Version : EMV Card Readers
On the topic of payments - we've received a replacement credit card with the embedded chip, though not our debit card yet.
I've seen credit card terminals with a slot in the middle of the bottom in many of the stores we shop in. Is that the EMV reader?
No one ever says anything about it, and I've never seen anyone using it, conditioned as we are to swiping.
I believe that is the EMV reader on the terminal. Expect a big push soon to educate people on the use of it. October is when liability for fraudulent charges transfers to the merchant if EMV wasnt used.
Yes, it's at the bottom. You have to push your card in and wait the cashier to do something. Some places I have been use them, so are not working yet.
I bravely slid my credit card into the slot at the bottom of the card reader in the grocery store self-checkout lane today. Nothing happened. I waited quite a while before removing it. Maybe they'r there, but they just don't work yet. It would have been faster to write a check.

It probably is faster to write a check when you consider that you will run into people here and there who never use credit or debit cards unless they realize they are at the store, all their groceries have been rung up and they forgot to bring any money! That's me, and I have trouble figuring out the swipe still sometimes since I use cards that way so rarely (as opposed to for online purchases), turning my card around and around in the swipe slot, oh it will get ugly. At least using a check is pretty brainless, everyone knows how to do it.
