View Full Version : i got approval, now the work starts
i have been working on parenting classes at my program for a long time. i thought i could get a social worker or someone to teach and asked around last year and had no luck. in the process i realized that the best deal is something like Love and Logic, a really great program but it also costs parents since that is outside my budget to totally pay for. i worked up a proposal and included how many paying parents and how many i could offer some scholarships to and made the proposal. i went to boss #1 and we talked it through for 30 minutes, including how to do childcare and how to do some dinner to get people more likely to attend, etc. i got approval and then 3 hours later a text saying that boss#2 vetoed it.
Last week i had another meeting and we did it again, talked through the whole thing, i learned more about how i need to do this very specifically for federal grant reporting, got it approved, yeah!! just sent in the contract information yesterday and now i have to make this all happen which is scary. i need to register 15 paying parents, to create a 6 week class for kids 3-12 years that is aligned with love and logic ( i have some curriculums), hire the child class teachers and get them ready, put together the pizza/salad dinner plan, and find a projector. some things are obviously simple but still feeling like this is a big project

Parenting classes?
yes, i hired teachers in the Love and Logic program to come teach my parents. my after school focus is on the families and kids, i have been struggling to have an ongoing parent program of any type.

Interesting... So people are aware that they are failing at parenting and then they are open to being taught how to parent better?

I doubt that the subject would be presented to anyone as: you fail as a parent, you must learn to be better.
No doubt Zoe will sell her new program as a self improvement class.
I took a class on Indian cooking, not because I fail as a cook of Indian food, but because I want to be a better cook of Indian food.

Okay, it is like A- parents who want to be A+ parents?

Everyone can learn a skill or two at a parenting class. The class attendees will have a range of parenting skills. Zoe may have some people in mind who really need to take the class and she may encourage them, but she can't force them. I'm guessing about this, anyway.

no, not at all. people take classes for many reasons. working with and parenting kids is really complicated in some ways, there are ways to make it much more enjoyable and effective without re-inventing everything. these teachers sound great, one is a retired principal and the other is her daughter who has also been a teacher. Many teachers take this course without having kids of their own.
i am not marketing it to parents specifically that i think need it but instead to parents who have asked about these classes.
I think it's great you'll be able to offer this but how much are the paying parents going to have to pay? Is it going to be hard to get 15 to pay the whole amount?
The best feature of adult learning is the peer learning that takes place. I learned so much from sharing challenges with friends while watching our kids in some activity. Parenting classes builds support and coping skills. Wonderful! Congratulations!

That's great, Zoe Girl!! Congrats on putting in the work and making it happen. I think it's a great idea.
Thank you all, sometimes the persistence can be a positive instead of annoying.
The families will pay $100, with $50 for second adult. Our community is becoming more affluent so I think based on my initial interest sheets I should be able to get 15. If not then we simply don't hold the class for financial reasons. I will still be paying maximum $500 out of my funds and for the children's class instructors. These classes are typically $150 for parents who need parenting classes for social service compliances so that is a discount for our community. I am also offering a $50 rate for teachers which is on top of my 15 required paying and that will offset the few scholarships I offer (I am still charging $25 but not turning them away, my friend had a L & L teacher volunteer so she could offer for free and many people did not complete the class so I want buy-in).
Oh, this is good! I hope it works out, and I will say again, I so admire you for digging in and trying to make a difference.

Many people don't really have a clue about parenting. They may not have gotten much as a child themselves, or had bad parenting and want to learn new ways because they recognize what they are doing either doesn't work, or feels wrong.
