I have an old iphone 4s that does not work for me as a cellphone anymore--I had to go to a larger screen.
Can this be used like an ipod, to download music?

How would I do this?

I don't have an Ianything, not a fanboi.
That said, several relatives do like their phones. Since you don't have an active phone service on it, can you use your local wireless network to connect to, and see if you can get to your Itunes account? If so and you can download the music to your phone (or purchase music from some other source) and save it to your phone, you could use it as a Ipod.

We have an old iPhone 4 laying around after my wife upgraded to an iPhone 6. After removing cell service from it, I wiped out all settings and content then enabled the wifi connection to our home wireless router. We haven't used it for music, although we do use it to stream Netflix content to our smart TV. Without cellular service, it is basically a beefed up iPod or really small iPad.

If you wanted to use it as an iPod, I'd think you'd simply enable wifi, download whatever music you wanted to store on it and play.

Thank you both--that is just what I was looking for. I know I can do this because I got the house wifi working on it. Cool!

Cool! What's even cooler is you can continue to use it as a phone, without cellular service, by getting a Google Voice number and installing the Google Hangouts app. That works anywhere you have a wifi connection.

I use my Samsung Note II for everything except making phonecalls. It's a better phone than the Moto G and makes a nice little tablet with wifi. Your I-phone should be capable of doing anything it ever did except for calls, too. As Alan said, even a work around for that, and facebook also has some sort of add on with which you can call your Friends as long as you're wifi connected.

Yes, I actually do this very thing with my iPod Touch.
