I have a bag of old ones. I've read a lot that they no longer contain mercury, so it's "safe" to throw them in the trash. But other articles say that the other metals in them, even though found naturally in nature, can cause problems since there are so many of the batteries.
Anyone have any luck finding places that recycle the alkaline batteries?

We have a Household Hazardous Waste Facility where we can get rid of them.

Here in Santa Fe, NM Staples will take them. We just ask at the front desk or cashier's desk who to give them to and they always know the routine.
