Well, here's a reason to celebrate reaching 55 years old. I got a letter from my homeowners insurance agent and due to my age, I now will have a premium reduction of $211 per year. I had no idea they offered something like this. I've not had a claim and been with them for six years on the house and 10+ years on the car.

I went to Old Sturbridge Village museum lately and they asked my age and I got a $2.00 discount on admission.

Where else does 55 years old gain me a discount? I could get used to this

My husband just got his AARP card cause he's 55. Cost $12 for a year. And I got one cause I'm married to him. On a two night hotel charge alone, we've more than recouped the cost of the card.

Some years ago, maybe when we turned 50? Our auto insurance went down.

I did receive the AARP info and reduced price in the mail. I am not sure if I could take advantage of discounts offered. I checked the webpage for member benefits. My health and dental are available from my employer. I don't travel much, rarely check into hotels and rarely eat out. Once in a while I buy brand new clothing but I tend to visit a local senior center that has an informal used clothing rack. They have great clothes in my size. I have the lowest rate on my cell phone already. What's there for me?

Some thrift stores offer discounts at 55.

Ask everywhere you shop... you will be surprised!

I wonder if utilities give an age break/ I've never seen language on this at my local oil dealer. I get the 3% discount for paying with cash but that's it.

Whenever we dine out, my wife inquires (loudly) if there is a senior discount available for her husband. It seems to amuse her.

I guess my question would be why are old people getting discounts at all? Are their houses less likely to burn down so the insurance should be cheaper? Do they not take up the same size hotel room as a younger person?

DH loves to lord it over me 5 months of the year when he is younger than I am.

I don't know, is there a market-based reason? Isn't this sort of your area of expertise?

We can agree that 50 year old drivers like us, The Iris Lilies, with no accident reports on our record at all, are deserving of lower rates than 20 year olds. Not sure about the rest of them older than 20.

Fewer wild parties at the house? Can no longer fit into the sports cars that cause so many accidents? ;)

I think it's a nod toward people who've managed to live past half a century in a country that reveres youth and newness. And that 55-65 years old really isn't considered "geriatric" anymore.

As for discounts at 55 and older, here's a list (http://savingmorethanme.com/2011/07/108-stores-with-senior-discounts-50-years-old) of "senior discounts" and how senior you need to be to quaify. There's a surprising number that hit at 55. (Don't worry about the URL; the list was updated last about a year ago.)

Turned 62 this past birthday - offered the Senior discount about 15 years ago - said "age requirement?" - lesson learned. From then on my response has been "yes thanks"!

The way I look at it, you have been overpaying for insurance for the last 10+ years. Nothing has changed. Demand a refund of at least $2110. :D
