My boss got fired yesterday. Nobody saw this coming,at least those of us beneath her in the hierarchy. It was handled very poorly.

I decided yesterday to go to part-time next year and strike out on my own a bit. No idea what will come of it and how I will generate enough money, but she described every physical symptom I have been having for the past 5 years--it was eerie. She works much harder than I do, and they have treated her very badly.

We talked for 3 hours.

After I sent in notice to request to go down to part-time, I felt like a great burden lifted. It was like a giant had been squeezing my heart, and had to let go as I floated up out of reach.

Last night slept well for first time in months.

Thanks, IL, it was definitely a day from which one reeled!

ouch, I think that is wise. It is not enough to try and change the system by ourselves or even carve out a safe space. The part time seems like a good balance towards getting out.

What type of work do you do?

I teach college courses. You're right about the balance--that is what I have not had for 5 years, and it's only getting worse now. This boss was a really, really good boss.

I know you are a few years younger than I am. What are your thoughts about at what age you'll draw social security?

I am going to do so at 62, which is two years from now, unless something else with a lot more income comes along.

Congratulations on choosing health over money, rodeo.

rodeosweetheart, Good for you on making the call to go p-t.
I also had a colleague who was unexpectedly let go in a layoff. She also was very good and her work impacted many in my large Megacorp., but the usual panic of quarterly results made her a casualty. I was so upset about it I almost quit myself, but I can't quite retire yet money-wise so I've had to continue. But I did let upper management know they had made a very foolish decision and btw, don't come to me for any help with this type of work because I'm not backfilling your error.

yeah, Lainey, I know what you mean, I can't retire yet either, so I will have to do more than one part time job. I thought about saying something to upper management in solidarity and decided it would not do anyone any good and could do me harm, so I am going to keep my mouth shut for now.

rodeo, good for you for not only locating but making a few steps toward the exit sign. At my day job they kept telling us that we were responsible for our own careers. And yet take action in that direction and... I wish you the best in your next move.

Thanks, Steve, I like your comment about locating the exit sign. I think that's exactly right.

I think that's true. They probably already know. Your decision sounds wise to me. I'm 51, and have been applying for work over the past few years. I find it is much more difficult to get hired at this age than when I was in my 20's, 30's, and 40's. There are different challenges.

Fortunately, I have enough money to meet my expenses, but it takes a lot of discipline and planning. It's worth it to me.

You are right, awakened, I am going to have to get way more into the discipline and planning and live on a much lower income. But I think it's the right path, to do it voluntarily before being forced into it.

Oh yeah, I think so, too. That's what I did. I'm so glad I practiced for those few years when my business started to drop. It really reinforced the habits that I needed to retire early.

I was just at Walmart today and realized, it's a good thing I cook and bake from scratch, because I thought these prices would be a lot cheaper. I don't normally shop there, but I needed some soap making ingredients.

Anyway, now that I'm home, I spend a lot of time making things instead of buying them. I realized today that it's totally worth it.
