View Full Version : Make Do howto books, 1940s or similar
Have seen references and occasionally scans from books with 1940s Make Do techniques.
Are there any online? Or does anyone know titles?
Websites welcomed too.
Books from that era are of interest or reissues or modern books with similar goals.
An example of this type of project would be to
* make children's clothes from the good parts of worn out adult size clothes.
*make a coat from a blanket
*how to mend things
*how to unravel a knitted item and make something else
The above example items are all clothing oriented, but the books had all sorts of household, cooking, and gardening info in them.
Look at Project Gutenburg. You want housekeeping books from the 40s

Check out Carla Emery "encyclopedia of country living"
old whole earth catalogs.
Also, our library has used book sales. I always search their stacks of donated books, you find some real gems.
Not just the 1940s, but from 1850 to 1950: http://hearth.library.cornell.edu/h/hearth/index.html . Amazing resource. From the site:
"HEARTH is a core electronic collection of books and journals in Home Economics and related disciplines. Titles published between 1850 and 1950 were selected and ranked by teams of scholars for their great historical importance. The first phase of this project focused on books published between 1850 and 1925 and a small number of journals. Future phases of the project will include books published between 1926 and 1950, as well as additional journals. The full text of these materials, as well as bibliographies and essays on the wide array of subjects relating to Home Economics, are all freely accessible on this site. This is the first time a collection of this scale and scope has been made available."

It's not the 1040's, but my mom used to delve into "Housekeeping in Old Virginia," which was the bible in our household, esp. for the proper cooking of Virgnia ham.

I have copies of these books:
"The Household Searchlight Homemaking Guide"
"The Virginia Housewife" (I wonder if it is similar to rodeosweetheart's "Housekeeping in Old Virginia"?)
"Common Sense in the Household"
If you want something newer, "The Tightwad Gazette" by Amy Dacyczyn (also #2 and #3) have all kinds of hints/tips.
