As part of my wardrobe decluttering/ seasonal clothing switch, I reorganized two of my three drawers last night, and find myself wondering,
How many pairs of socks do other people have?
Lol. They breed in there, don't blame me. I've gotten it down to half a tallboy dresser drawer, DH's take up most of one.

I have ten pairs of socks. I knit eight of them. The other two are black socks that I kept, since it's hard for me to knit with black yarn. I love my hand knit socks. I bought spectacular yarn that is hand dyed in Czechloslovakia. It's really good wool. They last and last. They're also really warm and comfortable.

I have 6 pair of white sports ankle socks. Only because I bought a new 6 pack a couple months ago. As they get stained (I'm bad about running out onto the decks in my socks) I'll toss them. I like my white socks to stay white.
I have 8 pair of black(4), gray (2), brown (2).

I think I have about 14 pairs.
6 for "business."
6 for casual.
2 for inside my boots during ice-out fishing in early spring.
I probably have 20 pair and another dozen or so half-pairs. Being the eternal optimist I believe some of the missing ones will eventually return home

I am kind of at Alan but trying to move in the direction of awakened soul. I got rid of all half pairs except one last night, and I am knitting my first pair with the self striping wool.
It is really interesting to read all the different approaches. I half a drawer full now, but I decided I should count and not go over a certain number.

I use to keep a plastic dishpan on top of the dryer to collect those poor lost "half-pairs". That was one of the first things I gave up when the boys left for college. I'm so excited to not have to match pairs anymore or make the dreaded decision to toss.

I LOVE socks and probably have at least 50-pairs. I have a 15"x21" sock drawer in our closet (which once was a small storage box on the closet shelf), and whatever will fit in that drawer are all that I will ever have. I like to organize things by storage space available. I also keep my belts in that drawer.
I have socks that are easily 3 or 4 decades old, many I knit myself. Some of those I only wear when I need to put on two pair of socks because they are old and stretched out, but still useful. I have a combination of cotton and wool socks I wear from fall until spring.
The 3-pair of SmartWool workout socks (several years old) will probably last me the rest of my life they wear so well, and I'll never purchase cotton socks for exercising ever again.... They just don't last as long as wool, nor do they feel as good as wool. I'm eliminating many of my older cotton socks as they get worn. I'm also good at darning socks, so you'll find some of those in my drawer as well. I've even re-knit the heels on some of my older knitted socks.
I have several pairs of "FUN" socks - a couple for St. Patrick's Day and also Christmas - which are several decades old. A pair with flashlights on them (one of my favorite things in all the world are flashlights) was a gift. In fact, many of my socks were gifts, and we always give good-quality socks to our family as gifts.
I have a number of black and navy socks I bought for 25-cents a pair in the boy's department of a store. I'll never need to purchase them ever again because they were purchased at stock-up prices. A few pair of socks in colors for specific outfits.

I have 30 pairs.
At the moment I'm kind of obsessed with socks. I'm trying to find a type of sock that will keep me from getting blisters while hiking.
Previously I just had a pair for each day of the week--I favored Thorlo Light Hikers. But I'm also trying REI merino wool crew socks and Smartwool PhD crews. I'm also experimenting with sock liners.
I could easily write several thousand words on the subject of socks at this point, but I won't bore you.

When I did the KonMari method, any socks that I would be embarrassed to wear without shoes in public were discarded. Now that I have a pair of brown Dansko closed-back clogs, any pair where the heel is wearing thin goes too. I wear brown loafers in fall/winter and like having nice brown socks in a subtle pattern showing; I have a few bamboo ones from Bass that I like. If any get holes I'll fix them but mine usuaally wear out at the heel.
Most others are black for work, white cotton for sneakers, and old ones with good elastic for riding. I really like my Smartwool cushioned socks but they pilled horribly. In all I have about 20-25 pairs. neatly folded and stored vertically like files in boxes in my sock drawer. Tidying up really was life changing!

I did not Kon Mari well my socks. Funny, I just did this the other day. They are folded into each other in a large bin on my closet shelf. I have more than I need and I tried to get rid of some but only four pair were worn in some area or I flat out hated. So now I have to just churn up the bin periodically because there are enough to last me for life as I seem to never wear out a pair of socks.
I found a pair of Smart Wools I forgot ex-BF gave me, now I can see what all the excitement is about.
this would all be fine, I can live with knowing I have too many socks but they fit in the bin in their designated spot so if the bin is full or half full, who cares? Except for one thing- I have to wear those ugly compression hose to try to help keep my blood pressure up, soooooo not exactly wearing socks in the recent past and don't see this changing soon. In winter, maybe I will wear socks over the hose.
So when I open the closet, the bin says "you're wasteful" and I spit back "temporary, shaddup".
I lost a pale pink $15 smartwool sock after one flipping wash, and kept its mate for Five Years, only to find the runaway behind a dresser in the coat closet when we moved. Two months later, it went missing again. It came back half a year after that, tucked inside one of DH's tee shirt sleeves. So I can vouch for Smartwool, not only smart but brilliantly crafty. This pair's 7 years old and going strong.:~)

I haven't counted them for awhile, but I think I've scaled back a little, so probably about 80 pairs. Crazy, I know.

20 pair. 15 pair are the same: midnight-blue casual socks. Makes pairing easy and DW wanted me to have two weeks of socks on hand (she does the laundry; OK). There is one pair of brown casual socks for when I'm wearing my brown shoes, one pair of black dress socks (suit/tuxedo/formal shoes), two pairs of "performance" (moisture-wicking active-wear) socks for use with boots, and one pair of Christmas socks (since I have no other Christmas-themed clothing to wear to an event). All in one of those plastic divider trays that resemble the inside of a case of bottles. The system works for me.

When we purchase socks in bulk for hubby (dress socks or sports socks), I use embroidery floss (a different color for each pair) to mark the toe of each pair so they get the same amount of wear. I've done that since we were first married in 1971 when we would buy a dozen brown, black, and navy socks every few years. I also have one of the largest collections of darning floss (something you just can't find anymore) thanks to going-out-of-business sales, thrift stores, and garage sales. If I don't have the right color of darning floss, I'll use embroidery floss.

So funny Lessisbest, I ALMOSt bought darning floss at a thrift shop yesterday but it wasn't marked and it seemed like too much of a hassle. I had never seen it, and need it to darn my 7 year old Nepalese silk mittens /
You've inspired me to go back and buy it tomorrow.
I Kondo-ized the sock drawer with the correct folding and darned if she is not right, it DOES take up less room. I made my husband admire it.
Threw out 3 more pairs so I am down to about 20 now, a mix of summer cotton and winter wool. And I was just hanging my laundry out (there is a foot of snow on the ground but the sun is bright, bright, bright) and found one of the missing socks in the fitted sheet.
