And figuring it all out...We have been crunching numbers. As much as I would love to live in the middle of 5 acres, the price is astounding here. We also want to be able to afford a small condo/townhouse in the Gulf Coast area, nothing big, since that is where we vacation all the time and eventually will retire.

The trade off is living in a smaller cookie cutter to live our dream at the coast. This area is mostly cookie cutters.

So what are your thoughts on compromising to get to where you want? We have always lived this way, simple living, smaller homes, less desirable neighborhoods, in order to get where we are.

We have always done the same thing so I think you are smart.

we have done the same thing, for sure.
Is there any way to go directly to the Gulf Coast area now, and get a small house there? Go ahead and make the move to the eventual destination?

Yeah, that sounds like a tempting solution. DH and I play around with a lot of different scenarios and I often think that if I had to live in a small apartment 6 months of the year to fund a seasonal dream house, I'd definitely do it.

Location is important to me--I want a good neighborhood and some kind of view--but I don't need a big house. I'd prefer one with a bit of design or character (like the one I have); I would pay extra to avoid look-alike housing, condos excluded.

No, due to hubby's job. But we do have a 7 year exit plan. :)

I do love the town we are in now and the good thing is, if we could find a smaller home, say around 1000 square feet or a little less, we could rent it out during the time we are at the coast. Rentals here, because we are in a tourist town, go like hotcakes in the summer time.

We found a beautiful property with land but I am very hesitant, as much as I hate having our neighbors down our necks. Or, if we could find an acre and build a small cottage but this town has so many restrictions- bigger is better here. :(
