I have friends there, I don't think they were at the protest personally but definitely had family or friends there. I wonder why they need to say their lives matter when they are shot at a peaceful protest. There are lots of ways of disagreeing, and I saw that the family of the young man they were protesting about has asked everyone to go home for their own safety.

But remember, there isn't racism here anymore!

I just feel like, as a species, we ought to be beyond this by now.

I am now working as if my country is at war, I am rarely political and mostly because of the emotional impact on me to be caught in conflicts that we are not skilled enough to work through (as an empathic person) so I know that someone is going to come back and argue the position I hold no matter what and there is pretty much no chance we will influence each other. But I see 2 things, there is some kind of unconscious thing going on where we (as a society) cannot let go of trying to control women and people of color. There is a step forward and then it gets massively more violent, death by police officers of Native Americans are the highest percentage followed by blacks, women are STILL trying to just legally control their own body (only within the last 100 years were we even 'allowed' to have birth control), the incarceration rate has skyrocketed with for-profit prisons. And in my world of education there is now this lie that the schools designed to help decrease the achievement gap are doing the right thing, yet they have a hugely higher out of school suspension rate for children of color for the same offense, which is proven to increase the odds of being in the justice system early.

As our world becomes more and more diverse, as our kids grow up with other kids of different skin tones and religions, I am scared and angry that we have this level of violence in our country.
