And now things get interesting...
Trump could run as an Independent!

Just his way of continuing to be a whiny bratty bully.
He is totally unqualified to be President morally and intellectually. It is an embarrassment to the American people that he has even gotten this far.

I think about 33% of Republicans support him at the moment. That is kind of a lot of people!

Jingoistic Know-Nothingism always seems to have a solid base of support during times of uncertainty.
Heck, look here:
https://archive.org/details/publicopinionino00merr
Surveys performed in the American occupation zone of Germany between 1945 and 1949. These were a whopping 191 public opinion polls on a wide range of matters, from "German Attitudes toward the Nuremberg Trials" to "The Problem of Cleanliness in Present-Day Germany".
Note the surveys on the attitudes towards National Socialism. In 11 surveys between November 1945 and December 1946, 47 per cent agreed with the statement that "National Socialism was a good idea badly carried out". Especially heart-warming are the responses to the 19 August 1946 "German attitude scale" survey: 37 % agreed that "the extermination of the Jews and Poles and other non-Aryan races was necessary for the security of Germany", 33% that "Jews should not have the same rights as those belonging to the Aryan race".
I see the same sort of movement gathering steam here in America. Fear/anxiety directed towards "The Other" by empty glib demagogues to gather political support. Identity politics to divide the population into easily manipulated groups. A willingness to throw out Constitutional protections of civil liberties for "safety" during this "exceptional time of danger". Etc.
Sickening. And dangerous.

Stop giving him sound bites, media. They freeking LOVE him, they adore him, they hate-cover him because he draws in viewers and produces ratings and his antics are mesmerizing. This is much the same way I hate-follow a particular blogger whose sh*tshow is as WTF as The Donald's, just on a smaller scale.
And those who dislike him here on this site can stop posting about him. Don't give him the attention. Give money to a viable candidate, vote in the primaries, but ignore The Donald. I may not vote for either major party candidate but I will vote in the Republic can primary.

It's not much of a threat, so Republicans fear what losing to Hillary in a Trump 3rd party run, but the thing is don't all polls have them losing heavily to Hillary if Trump was the Republican nominee as well (and I think Bernie would sweep into the white house in the case too - keep the faith, vote Bernie!). I mean come on a Trump nominee is not really a strong nominee to win the general election, talk about your unfavorables, making even Hillary look good. So heads you lose, tails you lose, is that a threat?
Yea the media sure in this long, infinitely long and boring, campaign season where they have to make watching grass grow sound exciting. And we have breaking news: the grass has grown 1/12th of an inch since 3 days ago, here's our special reporter on the scene filming the grass ... But it's not just the media if Trump is leading polls of Republicans at this point which I think he is, although the anti-Trump vote is split a dozen ways it is true.
media
They will craft whatever brings in ratings. Maybe I run with a different crowd, but I don't know of anyone in my sphere who takes Mr. Trump seriously. I still say he is a distraction for some other endeavor yet to materialize.

Reviewing the recent poll data at http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/latest_polls/president/ you would appear to be right. It looks to me that Marco Rubio has the best shot at defeating Mrs. Clinton.

It is embarrassing the American people have supported him this far. Without that support he'd just be loud and annoying.
money talks and bullshit walks. Like Rick Perry, I think if he just keeps talkin', he'll hang himself with his own rope.
gee, I really didn't think the Internet would let me get away with "bullshit."

Perhaps it is the fed up masses telling the Republican Party that they are not buying the bullshit anymore and it's entertaining to manipulate the system by supporting the most outrageously incomprehensibly unfit candidate. They are telling them, we know it doesn't matter what we want so why not have a little fun. Trump can't hang himself because the hangman is having too much fun.
The Republican base has finally realized how futile it is and how utterly useless it is to struggle with the system, so why not destroy it. Make a damn farce of it. Take it right out in the public square and put a dunce cap on it. Take it to the finish line and hang a gold metal around its neck. This is what we want. Absurdity.......the rest of the world thinks we've gone loony. No one will want to come here, they've all gone mad. And they all have guns. They shoot each other to prove who is more ethical than the other.
Maybe we've just given up and left it all for dead.

The USA needs to be careful...
The Parliamentary Labour Party proposed Jeremy Corbyn as a so-called 'protest' candidate. He won!

I heard Tony Blair referred to that as "tragic", and said Labour faced annihilation if became a "fringe protest movement".

I'd care what Tony said if I had any respect for him.
Not that it would happen (I hope it wouldn't) - but imagine Trump running as independent - and then Sanders walking off and running as independent. The election could turn into complete toss-up.

If that happened I would register to vote.

This captures much of what's going on. Those "I support Trump" people may not vote for him when it comes right down to it in a primary poll, but they love sticking it to The Man, the Republican Man.
And here is Jeb Bush still limping along when the electorate has said No More Bushes, enough already! But the establishment just keeps propping him up. So we confound them with Trump support.

I just don't think that 33% of Republicans are that bright.

And now Jeb is going to be a loser in his mother's gimlet eye. It's the stuff of Shakespearean tragedy, I tell you.

I'd obviously rather have Bernie be president. But I'd be satisfied with Trump and prefer him to Billary.

I think Trump’s appeal goes beyond dissatisfaction with the “Republican Establishment”. I think it has more to do with distrust of the prevailing political culture, both left and right. I like what Victor Davis Hanson wrote on the topic:
“Trump’s vague “make America great again” was the natural bookend to Barack Obama’s even more vacuous “hope and change.” The popularity of such empty slogans reflects a culture in which no one any longer trusts institutions, the media, government, or politicians.”

And.... Do you think ANYONE here in the UK gives a toss about bLiar? He was Bush's poodle; a liar and money-grubbing and his wife is no better. Sometimes I wish I believed there was a hell, for if there was....that's where he'll be heading.

I view him much like Bill Clinton. You can say what you like about the guy's ethical stature, but he knew his politics.

I just read this comment on the UK (unofficial) website Army Rumour Service, known as ARRSE. (FYI A fart is oftened called a trump in some UK circles)
'Well with the (very appropriate imo) name Trump.I would say he's playing it for laughs. As someone on the News Quiz said.' Great name for someone with a face like a startled anus.'

I believe in giving credit where it is due. I think Mel Brooks said about Hitler something like "you can be the worst man in the world but a real snappy dresser".

While I disagree with Buckley's politics, I have found many of his witticisms make me chuckle! Same for yours. :)

formative years schmormative years, I mean ok one may find certain ideologies in the end much more friendly because of basic temperament. But one can also come to various analyses because they actually offer a way to make some sense of what is going on in the world, whereas much doesn't (nah a theory that seems to make some sense of the facts is not The Truth, but really one probably knows a lot more about things closer to home so may get closer to The Truth, than trying to puzzle out international affairs in full or something).
As for Bushes, maybe no one wants more, but the Republicans haven't got much better to offer that is doing any good in the polls either (while there are some other not completely insane and entirely unqualified candidates, those that do in well in the polls are crazier by far than the prospect of another Bush).
