Angela Merkel. Amazing to me as I was telling my in laws just a week ago that I hoped she'd get this honor, and she just did. What do you'll think, a good choice or not?
I just heard it was between her, Donald Trump, and the leader of ISIS? REALLY??
I think Bernie got the majority of the votes on line. He might as well be invisible.

Seems that way.
CathyA, the criteria for Person of the Year is the one who most affected the events of the year, for better or for worse. Not sure that Trump actually affected any events YET. If he gets to be President, Person of the Year 2017 could be him…
Is the person of the year a USA citizen? Or, is it popular culture?

Not necessarily either USA citizen or popular culture. Doesn't even have to be a human. One year it was YouTube. It can be more than one person--American Women got it in 1975. It could be a "person" anywhere in the universe who makes a big difference in world events.
Hmm, I wonder if Pope Francis is on the nomination list. On the other hand, I wonder if terrorists, gun makers or NRA would be a nominee. Especially the NRA, lot of influence on politics and lobbying. Lot of money there in support of guns

agreed
I just read she is only the 4th woman to get it since 1927. What? 4 women in 88 yrs? She's a good choice, though, if not Bernie.
Seems that way.

Time completely blew any credibility with this Person of the Year thing in 2001 when they picked Rudy Giuliani rather than Osama bin Laden. Clearly, by their own definition, it should have been bin Laden, but they chickened out. Their choice was a good measure of how pusillanimous the media became in the wake of 9/11; they undoubtedly feared (probably with good cause) that there would have been mobs with pitchforks outside the Time/Life building if they'd picked bin Laden. But past picks included Hitler and Stalin (twice!).
Thanks for that info catherine. I think they should change the name of it though.....depending on who it is.........like "Monster of the Year", "Assh++l of the Year", etc. :)

Who cares.....TIME lost all credibility for journalism years ago. Does anyone buy TIME anymore - other than doctors for their reception rooms? It was also about the worst picture they could have put into print - unrecognizable. It looked like a poorly done oil painting done over a photo. Did you notice how the eyes looked "flat" like a photo? Completely unlike the rest of the picture. Creepy looking.

my dad gets time, lol. BUT it is a weekly magazine and he pays $5 a year for it. They can't be doing well if customers are paying 10 cents an issue!

I feel cheap.. I get TIME! :|(
But I do have to admit that most issues go directly to my BIL who enjoys reading it and the rest go into the recycling unread, unless the cover topic attracts me. I simply can't find the time or motivation to read them it seems.

The basic idea that consumer magazine publishers follow (or at least did 15 years ago when I worked in publishing) is to try and pay for printing and postage and newsstand distribution costs with the newsstand sales/subscription revenue and then make their actual profit on advertising. But I agree that $5/year doesn't seem like enough revenue to cover the cost of a weekly magazine.

the only good thing about Time, is I'm not really up to reading a full newspaper daily so I can pick it up and catch up on the major news so I didn't feel so out of the loop. But it skews too conservative to me so I follow up with BBC and NPR online. I liked it better when he got Newsweek but that went poof as I'm sure Time will as well. Now I can read the New Yorker free online through my library, if I can remember how to do it, that's my weekly of choice but I will not pay that much, plus I can barely read their print without a magnifying glass. With the library version, I think I can change font size. I would actually care who they picked for Person of the Year.
