I am taking a journalism course on-line and completed an article about a local Victorian Mansion with new ownership. The house is being renovated and the community is largely supportive. I wrote about the history and description of the house. I consulted a Victorian House Expert in Boston in order to write a thorough and accurate article.

He was so impressed with the final result which I posted on my blog, he invited me out to an Open House Sunday at the posh headquarters of the New England Victorian Society. He suggested I could get a job writing nomination papers for National Historic Register clients. I am debating whether or not to go. It's a long journey in to the big city.

It sounds inviting, he asked me twice. I am seriously looking for a new occupation as a writer or maybe journalist. I just took one course and not sure if I should follow up and meet him. It could open doors. It's just a long long journey for 2 hours. I am from Massachusetts and it's not unusual for us to whine about driving a 1/2 hour away. May be cultural problem.

Sorry to be a bore but I am longing for a quiet walk in the woods after a tough Fall.

What a neat opportunity. Maybe plan to take enough time while there to explore a local walk as a reward to yourself for going.

I would definitely explore the option & go! Writing opportunities don't show up everyday. Good luck!!!!

Not a bore at all, Cypress. I find it very inspiring. I think you should go - what's 2 hours in a lifetime? A crap movie on Netflix?

I read the article on your blog and it's terrific! (In fact, your whole blog is great.) Go for it!

I hate to drive into the city, any city, but I would think once for this opportunity would be worth it...maybe you could get an Uber car...

Cypress: I enjoyed your article too, and agree with others that you should take advantage of this opportunity. How about taking the commuter rail into the city?

Today is a gorgeous day here in MA for a hike in the woods. Rejuvenate today and go to the event tomorrow -- I suspect you will be very glad you did!!!

Cypress,
many years ago when I lived in Atlanta I met a woman who made her living doing these write-ups. If it combines your interests of writing and historical houses, seems like it would be a winner.
I echo others who say the 2 hour drive will be well worth it. Good luck!

Well, I made the long drive into the city. I actually drive part the way than rely on public transportation in and out of the city. The traffic on Sunday was relatively light but I am a sissy on the highway. I rarely drive so fast and find it unnerving to keep up. The roadway is familiar so I made the best of it. I did meet this man who was so pleased with the article and we toured around a Victorian House museum. It's the first time anyone openly praised me for what I did and seemed so genuinely pleased.

Apparently, this field of writing national register nominations is complex and typically requires an MA in history at least. So, I don't have that. As this article was part of a journalism class, who knows what and when I might return to this topic. Journalist are advised to be good at one thing in particular. My thing might turn out to be Victorian houses. I don't know. I made a connection and that's all.

I ended up driving back in the dark which I don't like at all. But, had no difficulty in travel. Being the true SLN person, I had a little snack waiting in the car. A thermos of hot tea, orange and granola bar. Something to give me a refreshing boost on the drive.

I'm so glad you went. It's so good to see what options might be in your future.
Great job on planning ahead and having a snack packed (I'm so bad at that and then end up spending $10 on coffee and food).
