This is the best part from the article:
"Trump is 'the walking id of the Republican base, and maybe of the American people, too,' Knowles said."
I think both major parties are sitting on hands with a full-house of race cards.
I'm in the camp that considers "social science" as something of an oxymoron. Especially when you talk about the "id of the GOP base". Isn't Freudian theory now considered about as scientifically sound as phrenology?
I'll happily grant that Trump is a buffoon; but quoting Harry Reid and a couple of liberal academics that "Republicans are bad people because science, that's why!" strikes me as insulting to Republicans, to science, and to sentient beings everywhere.
At least "social science" tells us that Republicans have better sex, so there's that.

I looked in vain for the Freudianism in the article as it sounded half amusing, ok I guess I was looking in the wrong place, none of the social science was Freudian. ID of the Republican base was just a metaphor, using a metaphor even from Freud, was not the social science itself.
I guess it should have looked more at unconscious bias (nah not out of Freudianism), rather than openly stated bias.

Ha! I've avoided canoodling with Republicans for years; maybe that was a mistake...

Now there's real "hard science". What kind of metric do they use for sexual quality?

Exit polling.
This is just wrong. :moon:

Oh dang, well that is unfortunate to us liberals :)
I think this can show, along with the popularity that Trump currently has, that there is more than conservative stances on a variety of issues going on. I wouldn't put my faith in just one study but I am seeing the popularity here of Trump and it scares me. Conservative politics don't scare me, people I disagree with don't scare me, but that there are now acts of violence that are being more accepted against different ethnic groups scares the crap out of me. California crossed over to whites not being the majority over 10 years ago when I lived there, I will admit to having moments of wondering how I will as a white American raised Christian but now Buddhist will fit into this changing society. It is fair to wonder how we all fit, how our values will be supported or not as we have a increasing diverse society, and will there be enough for us all. So maybe that is what we can say, yeah I am scared and nervous but I do not hate and condone violence. I think that the conversation needs to happen.

Could it be because Democrats don't know what sex is?

I gotta laugh at that one, even as a liberal looking back it was funny.
My favorite Clinton quote:
"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the--if he--if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not--that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement....Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true."

wonder who submitted the data..........my one experience with a Republican left me wanting more than once......he thought it was good. LOL
Seriously though. My opinion is that much of this rumbling go on has to do with the fact we are much more diverse as a country now. I've not done research but suspect the white majority is growing smaller each year.

You are correct. And the Republican Party espouses xenophobia at the peril of their long-term viability on the national stage. If I recall correctly it's expected that white non-Hispanics will cease to be at least 50% of the population in about 25 years.

Dont make the mistake of thinking conservatism is limited to white non-Hispanics. Trump may be about to prove that fear and hatred are universal. What is fear? It is one of the two great motivating forces. The other is love and none of the candidates are bringing that up. Fear of a future full of terrorism and economic hardship is worse than actual terrorism and economic hardship. I could be tempted to overlook many weaknesses in character if ai was convinced he/she was a path to safety and prosperity. The Republican Party is not dead; it just hasn't realized it yet.

The "conservatives are white non-Hispanics" narrative is cleverly constructed to convey the subtext "conservatives are white racists".
Which is kind of racist, when you think about it, as there are plenty of non-white cultures in this country that are pretty darned conservative.

yea and people have short memories, especially if all democrats can deliver is the status quo anyway, that dog don't hunt (I'm not saying repubs deliver better, I'm saying you give people two choices and a rat in an experiment would push button 2 after awhile if all button 1 delivers is pain - never mind that it turns out button 2 does as well). The world in which people keep pushing button 1 even though it only delivers shocks out of some ideological purity, I don't think it exists.

well there is plenty of real economic hardship, Bernie Sanders talks about it.

yea a certain amount, but not blatant racism, but then I'd have to think of Muslims as threats, and I don't, it runs contrary to my experience for one thing.

Yes, but it's the good kind of racism because it fits the progressive narrative that there is a genetic predisposition for certain groups to vote democratic.

I agree that whites don't have a lock on conservative beliefs. But I do also believe that Trump will not be attracting many minority votes, either in the primary or the general.

I think it be hooves the Democratic Party to take out ISIS and let dead dogs lie in Syria....back out and hope the terror threat dies down. The only wild card is...what radical wing realizes that the more fear can be spread, the more likely Trump can be elected.

It would be in our best interest, regardless of party, to just let the middle east go and the chips fall where they may. We've ****ed the place beyond all recourse. But of course the military industrial complex won't ever stand for that because there's no money in admitting that pretty much everything from the last 70 years were a drastic expensive mistake and that we should just walk away.
The best I am willing to hope for is that things don't implode so badly in the next 10.5 months that Trump can convince a majority of the general election voters that the brown skinned boogeymen are really as scary as he portrays them to be. Right now he's only convinced a subset of republican voters and not much of the rest of us. Another situation in the US that can be presented at least somewhat plausably as a terror attack and who knows what voters will do.

I had a dream that I went to the fire hall to vote, and I stood in line talking pleasantries with people I recognized as I waited to cast my vote. And finally I found myself standing in front of the voting machine. It was one of those mechanical jobs that had all the names type written and the metal lever you pulled down.
Well, I stood there a long time trying to get the courage to vote for a certain unpopular candidate whose name I can't remember but I just remember Trump being on the ballet and avoiding the thought of pulling his lever. But the lever wouldn't stay down. Every time I pulled the lever I wanted it would flip back closed.
I became aware that the lever next to Trumps name was larger than the others. I was so full of fear.....I didn't want to tell the attendant waiting for me to clear out yet every time I pulled that damn lever it flipped back and the lever for Trump would seem to be getting larger like a Pinocchios nose.
People were getting noticeably upset that I was taking so long but I really feared reporting the machine more than I feared accepting the outcome. So just to avoid causing further turmoil I reached up and placed my finger over the lever beside the word Trump. It was very large by now. I grimaced a little, took in a deep breath and closed my eyes and I flipped that lever. And it stayed open. I reached up and pulled the large arm that swung open the curtain and everybody was smiling and seemingly unpreterbed at all. I left the fire hall feeling a little upset and I woke up.
Honest....I had that dream. I'd like to get back in that dream and see how he did. See if he got elected how the country turned out. I'm kinda curious about that.
