I asked for strength and God gave me difficulties to make me strong.
I asked for wisdom and God gave me problems to solve.
I asked for prosperity and God gave me brawn and brains to work.
I asked for courage and God gave me dangers to overcome.
I asked for patience and God placed me in situations where I was forced to wait.
I asked for love and God gave me troubled people to help.
I asked for favors and God gave me opportunities.
I asked for everything so I could enjoy life.
Instead, He gave me life so I could enjoy everything.
I received nothing I wanted, I received everything I needed.

Very much like this prayer attributed to a Confederate soldier--one of my very favorite prayers of gratitude. Thanks for posting.
A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER'S PRAYER
Author Unknown,
(Attributed to a battle weary C.S.A soldier near the end of the war)
I asked God for strength, that I might achieve;
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health, that I might do greater things;
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy;
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men;
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life;
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among all men most richly blessed.

After my fathers death, my mother told me to go to his bedroom and take anything that he had there as a personal rememberence of him. In his closet I took what I had mainly came for......a 1950s vintage Gibson guitar with a very worn fretboard that his fingers had played for some fifty years. As I turned to leave I found on his dresser a pocket knife he had carried, a 50 caliber shell he had brought home from Saipan in WWII and tucked into his mirror a newspaper clipping all yellowed and faded .....which read
Dear God
So far today I have done all right.
I haven't gossiped.
I haven't lost my temper.
I haven't been greedy, grumpy,
nasty, selfish or overindulgent.
I am very thankful for that!
But in a few minutes, Lord,
I am going to get out of this bed,
And from then on,
I'm probably going to need a lot more help.
Amen

Thank you all - counting my blessings.
In The Confessions St. Augustine says "Give me chastity and self control, but not just yet."
