make sure to rate what you have seen and it tries to find other things you might like and then those lead you to others and you are led down a rabbit hole into the neverland of Netflix. I have a 300 item queue, I will die before watching the whole thing. Granted I share my queue with my daughter and mother so I am not solely responsible for that hot mess

As I mentioned in another post, we are now in the throes of the HBO series The Newsroom. It is so awesome.. I am dreading getting to the end of the series. Brilliant storytelling, character development, casting.

I've been watching a show with a premise that sounds truly too awful to believe, but it's actually rather entertaining: izombie. it reminds me of Dead Like Me, another macabre comedy (that may also be available on Netflix). It's quirky and silly and most certainly the antithesis of tasteful britcoms, but reasonably fun and amusing.

(Unbelievably bad premise: young med student is attacked by someone who's taken a drug that turned them into a sort of zombie. she retains her humanity, but need for fresh brains causes her to switch careers and work in morgue. Finds that eating brains of murder victims gives her visions which help solve crimes. )

I would suggest going to websites for The Emmys and Golden Globes to find the shows nominated for best dramas, comedies, miniseries.

many of the ones mentioned here are on those lists, but some are not --- tv Rodriguez, Murder She Wrote??????!!!! ;)

Also, just googling "best tv dramas of the year" or " best tv dramas of the decade" and etc brings up good lists.

Top critically acclaimed tv dramas of recent years include

Breaking Bad
Orange is the New Black
Justified
House of Cards
Fargo
Homeland
True Detective
The Bridge
The Affair
Bloodline
Game of Thrones
Mad Men
Downtown Abbey
Better Call Saul
Ray Donovan

and if you want to,go. Back to the dawn of excellent tv, it starts with The Sopranos and continues with

Deadwood
The Wire
The Shield
West Wing

ones from the UK include, and these are all murder mysteries

Broadchurch
The Fall
Happy Valley

I tire of detective and mystery shows pretty quickly, I like something else propelling the narrative.

I love Mrs. Fletcher! How can you not love a show that had a widow of a certain age as the protagonist who was not only allowed to be intelligent and interesting (if nosy) but also allowed to be brave, independent (without super spy powers) and even a love interest now and then? She was the bomb.

I wanted to like The Fall but even though I loved the actors, I hated it. Had to fast forward to Gillian Anderson's part in each episode. I hate when there is too much footage from the criminal's perspective. Seems too much like a snuff film. Same reason I can't watch Criminal Minds. Yuck. It's like torture porn. I've honestly and sadly been privy to too much real life sex crime that I cannot find the entertainment value in it.

And funny, I liked The Fall because we really got to know that perp and he was interesting.

But I Agree that there is a lot of torture porn on tv, and for the network shows, they are so weak that it simply is not worth watching.

Justified had some awful and violent scenes, but I made it through them without closing my eyes, and that show is so well weitten and played that the violence was secondary.

I had to give up on Sons of Anarchy a few seasons in, too much awful, violence even though I loved those guys.

Lessisbest's list is our go-to viewing and often what I'll play in the background as I'm working.

Just going through and watching the old classics is fun. The costumes, the cars, the lines!

My husband is currently enjoying the original Bixby/Ferrigno Hulk tv series while I'm laughing at the bad makeup,
and other shortcuts and effects done in old tv shows.

Other viewing I'd recommend:
Firefly & Serenity (YES!, the movie is back on Netflix!)
Headhunters - It's like Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels but edgier, Norwegian I think
Lilyhammer - Mobster decides he wants to live out his time in witness protection program in Lilyhammer.
Redirected
Ragnarok
Ascension

I find really bad disaster movies like Category 8 hilarious. MST3K worthy!
My husband likes to watch the mountain climbing movies and documentaries.

Enjoy the rabbit hole in your searches...if you don't like something, turn it off and watch something else.
Doesn't cost extra to try :)

PS - Snowpiercer was awful! Don't waste your time.

There's a lot of really nifty documentaries, including the Ken Burns PBS ones. Also, a lot of Nova episodes. I probably watch too much TV but my favorite hobby is knitting or crochet, so it makes sense to have on something that I get a lot out of just listening.

Ones I've liked:

Ken Burns- Prohibition
Ken Burns- The West
Secrets of Underground London
Titanoboa
Dinosaur 13
Bigger than T-ReX
The Emperor's Ghost Army
The Search for General Tso
The Poisoners' Handbook

Well, it DOES take a while to get into it. This is in my top 3 tv dramas of all times, and its said to correctly represent the tensions between gangs, cops, cop hierarchy, and city hall. I had to start it a couple of times, too. Most importantly, I had to turn on subtitles.

But I am wondering if, because I have an Amazon account, it was credited to that.

I would probably cut Netflix and sign up for BBC if it's enough programming at a reasonable price.
If I don't like it I can change back to Netflix or sign up for Hulu.

I don't feel comfortable paying for more than one service at a time, how many hours of TV do I need to have available to be entertained?

I keep thinking that DH and I will watch "walking Dead" one of these winters when we run out of things to do and movies to see.

i watched an episode and it was scary. At this point in my life Im not sure if I like obviously fake but still scary things or not, Im on th edge of that. American Horror Story is the same way.

My take on Walking Dead is that the entire production is not top notch and there are better shows to watch considering writing, acting, etc. I suspect I wont like it enough t stick with it if I actually start watching it.

Right now I am watching Season 4 of Homeland and I am still finding it entertaining even after 4 seasons and even after super fans are reporting disappointments with the season. I do wonder how long crazy Carrie can head up an important CIA office before someone gently removes her from doing curther harm.

"Like Sunday, Like Rain". Don't ask why, I don't know. Two things bothered me about the movie. Every time Reggie was shown playing the bass, the fingerings on the fretboard were all wrong. Couldn't they have figured out how to show an actual player? And the gradual affection between the 12 year old and his nanny culminating in her goodbye kiss.......kinda uncomfortable for me. Other than that.....I liked the plot.

"Like Sunday, Like Rain" Just watched it. I thought it was good and well worth watching, but not great. It was a nice change up from the usual Hollywood type plot. I'm not so sure there are really kids like the emotionally mature Reggie, but it was not too much of a stretch and the characters seemed otherwise real. I'm an old cornet player and the cornet playing was not technically correct either, but a small thing.

I was willing to pay - but since I can't right now : http://thewatchseries.to/serie/Doctor_Who_(1963) - have to watch these on the computer but there are more old episodes here than Hulu had. If anyone tries it, I'd be concerned about viruses (I'm on Ubuntu which is safer) and some of the links don't appear to work, but I've had good luck with the vodlocker.com ones. I would STRONGLY recommend ANYONE that tried one of the above (same name, different address after the . ) to ONLY be on a LINUX or BSD machine when viewing these. I don't have access to anywhere near a current Mac, but I know it has stuff that effects/affects Windows systems. (sent a link to a parent and they tried it on their Windows machine, not following directions).
Not sure on the comment on production quality, because some of those OLD episodes were recovered from tapes over the years and then they tried to clean them up (lucky to have them at all). Some episodes would be priceless if recovered just for shear laugh value (found one part), Doctor Who at the OK Corral.

DH and I have been binge-watching Mad Men for the past two weeks. 3 episodes a night. We'll probably complete 7 years of programming before Thanksgiving.

We are so into it. It's not just because of the quality of the show--the writing, casting, acting--but we LIVED that life! All those 60s references just make us smile. And not just that--we also complete relate to the New York commuter lifestyle. DH worked on 5th Ave as an ad space salesman for House Beautiful and Boating Magazines; I worked at NBC, 30 Rock as a secretary in the unit managers department. The office culture is SO familiar to us. The attitudes towards the office "girls"--the ambition and cosmopolitan after-work habits. We also relate to the life in the suburbs: they lived in towns we lived in in Westchester County. We rode Metro North every day to work and back.

It truly feels like stepping back in time, and we are fully engrossed.
