I have been working at a Non-Profit children's dental office part time since 2009. In that time we have had a revolving door of Drs through there due to burn out ( very very long hours and extremely fast paced due to the amount of children that need to be seen) We have had our current one here for almost two years ( a record ) . He is mid 60's, doesn't live in the area, the agency puts him up in a hotel for the week
Last week we had a patient in and the child's mother kept staring at the Dr. And staring. And staring. To the point where it felt very odd.
At the end of the appointment she asked him if he had been on TV a few years back. He blushed and said yes, that was him. Come to find out his wife is a hoarder and they were on the A&E show Hoarders ( season 1 episode 5 )
I had been wondering why he had chose to work here, 100 miles away, with a huge patient load, instead of having his own private practice, and close to retiring. Come to find out, at one time he did have his own practice and sold it, then blew through his retirement to keep up with his wife's hoarding.
In alot of ways he reminds me of the DDS that I worked with for 15 years, but this was mind blowing to say the least
He never talks about his wife too much, mostly about their dogs ( another assistant, and myself are huge dog people) and what ever book he is reading ( we both have the same taste in books)

Wow. That's quite a life experience. I couldn't imagine working long and hard to get to retirement and then having a spouse burn through my cash which then forced me to return to work (in a less than ideal job, it seems). But I'll bet in many ways he is an extremely interesting person!

but why would you risk your dental practice to be on Hoarders and have patients recognize you and not want your fingers in their mouths? I don't get why he did it. But I haven't watched yet.

They had two mortgagees on two bouses because his wfe's only solution to the mess was to move. These are Seattle area mortgages, smthey are high.

OP does the wife have some kind of physical problem? She face and eyes twitched a lot.

I think that the twitching is a nervous thing. I met her at the office Christmas party in 2014 and the three of us were the first ones there and she was just fine. However, once more peopl came, she got rather nervous and twitchy.
Seattle is very expensive for house prices. I lived in a suburb just east of Seattle for 42 years and it was getting harder and harder to live there due to the cost of living and property taxes ( I had a small horse farm in Redmond) The second house was in Vashon Island was is even more expensive
