For two years now, I have been trying to find a way to get rid of a big old entertainment armoire we bought back in the 90s. The market is now flooded with them so I couldn't even get someone to take it for free but I kept trying on craigslist. Out of the blue, a guy called and offered me $50. SOLD - we spent last night wrestling with it to get it out the door and into his van but it's finally gone. I felt like it was a symbol of our old lives/ridiculous stuff and was holding us back from getting on with our house sale and move. I should save the $50 but we are going to celebrate my looming retirement by spending - eating out and having some great Mexican food and margaritas.

Here the thrift stores won't take them or china cabinets because they can't sell them. We have a big one in our bedroom that matches our furniture. I tried to sell it at 1 point and listed it for $150.00 since I had paid $800 for it but no calls. Then we moved and our bedroom is big so I am glad we kept it. No TV in it of course but it does store other things.

Painting a china cabinet cream or ivory, and then using it in a hall,by the bathroom to store towels and toiletries, seems to be the trend. The key is, as you say ,"store other things."
No one displays dinner China these days since kitchens are big and have lots of space. And no one wants Hummel figurines or etc.

I have a small Victorian burl walnut cabinet that I sSuppose could be called a " china" cabinet but it was made 30-40 years before the China cabinet popularity hit big. I will admit to displayng 140 year old flow blue china in different patterns i. It because I think its pretty, I am a Victorian dinnerware freak.

I actually bought a small craigslist oak china cabinet for $35 and painted it off white with a deep color inside the glass doors. We use it to store extra dishes, cookware, jars etc since our kitchen doesn't have much of a pantry.
