I hope the Tiny House movement has gained more traction when I am ready to give up this larger home. I hope their are Tiny communities around here. I could totally live in the one in which they showed the interior.

You can buy an 8′ x 8′ unit for just $960.00 and with all the upgrades it is just $1,352.00.
Seems like false advertising? What can the upgrades be? Not those interiors.

I love the idea. I however watched my son and his wife jump on the Tiny House wagon for months dreaming, took a class, saving, talking to builder weekly, the $$ kept going up and the places to reside in the home never appeared. They were to the point of buying land till they found not one municipality near their work that would allow Tiny Homes. I would love to see more talk of zoning and planning in articles then the darling homes.

The builder my Son was dealing with, even to the point of trying to get on the TV show about the event, Is now using his two models as rentals on the side of the expressway. The builder is in a not so nice trailer park and leased four lots for the event. I wonder if he ever actually sold any.

Son and wife are now planning on buying a very small home in the fall. The realized in the older cities surrounding Ann Arbor there are many old small homes with tiny yards. Now the only issue is which municipalities allow Chickens;)

I am also curious about the zoning and planning aspect of the tiny homes. We have a few scattered around the area.
I know you have to obtain a bldg. permit and pass inspections to get power. So hubby and I went on a drive to take a closer
look at some of them. 3 of them were getting power from the main structure on the property. No sep service which means they could not pass
inspections. One of them within the city limits of a small town had it's own power pole. I am guessing that bldg permit requirements and inspections
were easy there. You really need to do some investigation before buying property with plans of having a tiny house. Especially those storage bldgs.

Up north they are called Gara-tages or Shed-ottages.

Over the years I have seen a few garages converted to small homes (typically rentals), and I wonder if there is a different category that needs to be targeted (inspectors and permits, not users)?
