View Full Version : Refrigerator water filter
The replacements are close to $50 each for the Kenmore. Off eBay very cheap. I was amazed at the big difference in price. I check everything for country of origin. I for some reason did not...China of course, USA seller. The Filters are NSF42 certified. STILL I have my doubts? Your thoughts please. I don't even want to drink the water from the fridge now.
I have bought both the Kenmore filters and ones from Ebay and I have noticed a difference.
The Kenmore ones last me 9 months before I need to change them and the 'other brands' last just about 6 months. I mark on my calendar when I change the filter and when to check, and I barely make it 6 months with the off brand ones. That said, I still buy them in bulk but now change them at the 6 months mark, when I notice the taste of the water changing. The do filter the water, just don't last as long.

I would not, and never have, purchased a refrigerator that dispenses water and/or ice. It's a total waste of money up front, and the refrigerators with these features cost more to run. I can suggest a number of better options - whether you want better tasting water, or completely purified water. My sister recently purchased a reconditioned refrigerator and said the water filter would cost more than the refrigerator did (and she could barely afford the reconditioned refrigerator), and I explained how she didn't NEED to use the water feature. To which she said, "OH"!
Lesson from a friend.... Once a year our city adds extra chemicals to the water for about a month, so your laundry smells like it was bleached - even though it wasn't - and your bath water smells like a swimming pool - and the tap water is unfit for drinking. Our friend found out how important it is to change the filter even more frequently than normal because his refrigerator filter won't remove this amount of chemicals from the water - AND - he has a whole-house reverse osmosis system. The biggest problem with ALL filters - most people don't replace them often enough.
We are on well, softener and rust removal system. Tested last year. I am not really sure why we need a filter on the refrigerator to be honest. But I was concerned about the quality of the filter manufacturing not the water coming out of it really.
lessisbest, If it was just me of course none of the extras, but it is not just me in the voting;)
Our refrigerator came with a water filter and a water tap inside the door so you get to keep the door open while you fill your glass. !thumbsup! I'm not a fan of very cold water anyway, so when the initial filter was used up by visitors and all, I just kept with the on-faucet water filter we've had all along. Our water isn't bad; just sometimes tastes off. The faucet filter takes care of that and they're way cheaper than the refrigerator ones.
