That is a lovely puzzle. I just sent a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired one to a friend: https://moonshotgamestore.com/products/saguaro-forms-cactus-flowers-by-frank-lloyd-wright-1000-pc-gold-foil-puzzle?variant=34347766087815&msclkid=397b580dce0b186c927b382747cfa3df&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Shopify_Microsoft-Ads_87945838749&utm_term=4587231234386486&utm_content=ShopifyImportAdGroup

Oh man, Jane, no way! We are down to the 500 piece, something identifiable on every piece ones. Between my eyesight and my arthritis, I need clear pictures and big pieces.

We seem to be only able to work on the "nostalgia for seniors collection" these days.

Late late into the topic.
I used to love puzzles when I was 20, I would run in from work and find a few pieces and run about life after that. I would glue them and hang up. Fast forward to two weeks ago I got a lovely puzzle. Took two days to put out the pieces between toddler chasing. Third day I attempted several pieces. Fifth day back in box it went. I felt I had given up on life by puzzling! It just felt like work and I could not stop. I felt like I had so much more to do. Guess fun was gone for me. I have to keep moving and have a hard time sitting:treadmill:

Tybee: I ordered a puzzle mat from Amazon that hasn't arrived yet. We did this one on the cellar workbench because we only have one table upstairs in our little house, and that is our only place to eat, etc. I can report back as to whether the mat is good for storage of work in progress.
Happy: It was 1000 pieces.

rosarugosa - I have one of those felt puzzle mats. I've never done a puzzle on top of it, but use it to cover my puzzle when I'm not working on it. Helps keep the cats from stealing pieces. LOL.

Right, that is our problem, as we have done them on the dining room table, so please report back! Happy, covering the puzzle sounds like a good option too.

Whoa, happystuff, that is amazing--I can't believe you did that in a couple of hours. OMG I would have given up, as there is no way I could have put that together, even with several days. Yikes.

DH and I made a really fun puzzle last week. It was a Liberty puzzle that a friend had loaned to us. I was not familiar with the brand, but it was a very intricate and challenging puzzle, with "picture shapes" within the puzzle in addition to the actual puzzle picture. Hard to describe and I don't think I'm doing a very good job, lol. Anyway, they are made of wood and crazy expensive, but we really enjoyed it. Here's a link to give a better idea: https://www.libertypuzzles.com/wooden-jigsaw-puzzles

RR, there is another brand of wooden puzzles that are similar to this... I think someone may have posted them earlier. These are beautiful! Did you find that the 'picture shapes' helped or hindered the putting together?

Rosa, these are really beautiful. I might have to get my granddaughters one for Christmas (too expensive for every day) because I think they would love the shapes within the puzzle angle, and they are mad for jigsaw puzzles already.

We had to approach it in an entirely different way from any puzzle we've ever made. This was the picture, so it wasn't easy to differentiate the different parts of the picture. There was also a trickiness to the way they cut the edge pieces, so my usual strategy of building the frame first didn't work. We found that we had to build out the shape pictures within the puzzle, then figure out how to link them together, and then it flowed more easily from there.
While we were working on it, I was pretty obsessed, and spent some beautiful sunny springtime hours at the workbench in the cellar working on the puzzle. I knew I should want to be outside, but all I really wanted to do was work on the puzzle until it was completed!

Yes, I never knew these Cadillac puzzles existed, and I was probably better off not knowing, but now I do. . . You can curse me for afflicting you with this knowledge if you wish! As a funny aside, this friend says she likes to share puzzles, and for this particular one, people had written their names, date of completion and their location on the bottom of the box. We were the fourth team to complete the puzzle, and it had gone from VA to CA to MA. That was kind of fun too.

Rosa, I love that you are sending the puzzle around and different people are signing it. We always share our puzzles, and I tried to get a puzzle sharing thing going with DH family, but so far, we are the only ones sending puzzles, so I guess my round robin idea has not caught on.

I'm stuck on an easy National Park banner puzzle--I really like it, but I just don't feel like sitting there, and my husband is usually keeps us on track and he is out of town. I need to finish it or put it away.

I've done a few million puzzles since I was here last. haha I'm definitely a puzzle addict. Since my knees hurt so bad, it's nice to have this to do with no pain. I've done a couple wooden puzzles. I found the trick was to lower the pieces down into their proper space. Sometimes a tweezer works well for that. I used to glue all my finished puzzles, but that became too many. So now if I'm on the fence about gluing them, I'll keep them put together, but put them aside and look at them later, when they might not mean as much to me, and then put the pieces back in the box, or give them away. I'm a bit neurotic about keeping them all though.

The last one I did was a little different from my usual nature/wildlife ones I usually do, but this one was so sweet, I liked it. I hope you can enlarge it to see the details.

That IS sweet, Cathy.

I always think of a (now passed away) friend of mine who was a puzzle enthusiast. She glued many of hers and had them placed around her grand house (which had a turret-reading nook!). I recall she used them for placemats and had them on her fireplace hearth like a rug would be. I miss her. She was so quirky. She also collected coat hooks. They were in unexpected places on the walls all over her house.

I also started gluing some together, but it just became too much. Now I'll take a picture of them and of the box, take them apart and pass them along to someone else.

I think you must be a very patient person to do puzzles. I sat down recently with a small puzzle (300 pieces) because a friend of mine loves them. I lasted about a half hour before all the pieces went back in the box.

happystuff
4-30-21, 10:29am
Beautiful! The trees look like a challenging one.

CathyA
4-30-21, 2:10pm
Thanks everyone. I have no idea why I can be so patient with puzzles. I wish I had that focus for housework! haha I think if my legs weren't failing me, I'd be doing a lot of other things instead........but who knows.
I just love putting a beautiful image together. I guess the more beautiful the image, the harder the puzzle can be. But I'm motivated to "make" that beautiful image. I sort of live in it for awhile. I have no artistic talent, so I guess this is the closest I can get to it. haha

Sometimes I think it's more OCD than it is patience. hahaha

The "Full Moon" puzzle, with the trees WAS very hard. A few times I considered throwing it across the room, but I didn't. Some of the trees were so dark, it was hard to tell what went where. I think I tried every single puzzle piece in every single opening.

I do get a few other things done during the day! I have my puzzle table set up in the corner of our dining room, which has windows on both sides. While doing the puzzles, I get to watch squirrels, deer, chipmunks, bunnies, and all sorts of birds. I set up a couple little stands between my table and the window and have some houseplants on there. So it's a nice little corner.

CathyA
4-30-21, 2:40pm
Ok, I'm on a roll. Here's a couple more I've done. I haven't been here in awhile, so there's lots of them. I hope I'm not bragging too much. :)

I think the first one is something like "Northern Lights". Funny, when the pandemic took off, everyone was buying jigsaw puzzles and they were selling out. The Chinese companies jumped in and starting selling tons of them. What's weird is, a lot of them don't have names for the images on the puzzle. So they just say words of things that are IN the puzzle......like Snow, Pine tree, Birds. I wonder why there's no name to it??

The second one is Rosemary Millette's Goldfinch and Thistle.

The third one is Winter Watch, by David Feathers. I love this one!

Thanks happystuff. Most of my stuff is 1,000 pieces, but I do a lot of 500 pieces. When I want a nice break, I might do a 300 piece one.
I've done 1500 piece one, and it was mostly fall colors, so that sort of got me over doing anything larger than 1,000. haha I think I posted a pic of that one awhile back, but here it is again.
I love doing owl puzzles, but dang, they are hard, since their feathers are in such different positions/colors, etc. But I keep doing them cause they're so beautiful. haha

Whatever you like is fair game! Nature is my go-to theme. I usually don't like any sign of humans. (Sorry 'bout that!) The only time I did one I wouldn't have picked for myself was when my son was young and he loved hot dogs (He's a vegan now, but still eats Vegan hot dogs...haha) Anyhow, I gave him this hot dog puzzle I'd found and he just couldn't do it. So I did it for him. It was a real challenge! It had like 5 different kinds of condiments on the hot dogs, and it was a cheap puzzle and I ended up having to put paper-weights all over the puzzle while I was doing it, to keep everything from popping up. then I glued and framed it and gave it to him. haha
He has his own videography business now and I kid him saying "So did you put the hot dog puzzle up in your office?" haha (I think it's in the back of one of his closets now. haha Putting it together was one of those labors of love. :)

In this neck of the woods the roads are slick these days, and I am glad that I do not need to venture out. I have been working on a crossword puzzle in the 12/12/2021 edition of the New York Times. The puzzle has 649 "across" clues and a mere 636 "down" clues. It is the biggest crossword I have ever attempted. At this time there are about 20 letters I still must come up with, before I can say I "solved the puzzle". Maybe tomorrow!

DH and I finished this puzzle yesterday. I bought it at a fun little shop in Swampscott last summer. I had asked the shop owner about the puzzles, and she said that she was an artist and had some of her paintings made into puzzles for her store. Her name sounded familiar, and I asked if she had donated an amaryllis oil painting to a charitable auction the previous year, and she had, and it was in my living room because I had bid on it and won, so it was a fun interaction! Needless to say, I had to buy one of her puzzles of a lovely local seascape.

That is so beautiful, and what a cool story about meeting the artist.

I am doing a 1000 piece yard sale puzzle. It is a symbolic way to deal with the fact I never had a yard sale for my parents, and I wanted to, and my brother "sold" everything, thousands and thousands of dollars of tools and antiques, for $3500. I found the puzzle in a store in Ohio driving back from my 3 days cleaning their house out for anything of sentimental value or important papers. It's more than my usual pieces, but it's my hope I can work through the grief and lay it to rest, along with the house and what he did.

And here is the other one I started. Funny story with this one, I put all the pieces in the box bottom (as I normally do) and turn the lid over for the picture. I started pulling the edge pieces and putting them together, but they weren't matching the edges in the picture on the lid - it was as if the outside picture edge had been left off. Anyway, finished the puzzle, put the pieces away and then caught a glimpse of the back of the box bottom... the FULL picture of the puzzle was there on the back of the box! LOL.

I would like to buy a crossword puzzle book for a friend as a gift. It seems like there could be some puzzlers here that could help, as it's a foreign world to me. He does the puzzles in the local newspaper without too much difficulty. The NYT puzzles seems to have some popularity for some reason. When I've checked out Amazon there seems to be all levels of difficulty and variety of sources. Thoughts appreciated.

Here is my latest puzzle, with a dark backstory that will probably be most interesting to LBB. This decrepit building is a local landmark of sorts on US Route 1 in Saugus, MA. In local online groups, people are always raging about what an eyesore it is, something must be done, etc. etc. For whatever reason, the presence of Karla's has always amused me, and I've seen it slowly crumble away over the years (it looks much worse now than it did when the puzzle photo was taken). When I had the chance to acquire it in puzzle form, I could not resist. It turns out there is also a dark backstory to Karla's. In a nutshell, it is owned by the family of a young woman who was dating a Saugus cop and it is believed by her family that he played a part in her mysterious death. The family stays current on the taxes, and leaves the decrepit property in its high-visibility location as a big f*ck you to the town.

I can see how doing puzzles is a good meditative exercise. Happy stuff, enjoy your holiday. I know you do pretty hard physical work so this downtime must be nice.

I bought husband a wooden one for Christmas and son one for his family. I have one I want to start but unfortunately need the dining room table so it will have to wait until Christmas.

For some reason, making jigsaw puzzles puts me into a "flow" state in a way that few other activities do. I am also frequently in that state at the pottery studio.

That flow state is great, but I never do it doing jigsaw puzzles. I probably have poor spatial intelligence. I definitely get into flow when watercoloring, and sometimes, if the words unlock in my brain, when I'm writing.

I have noticed that too, Rosa. It is supposed to be very good for maintaining brain health as well.

My two holiday puzzles. These were both brand new, unopened puzzles that were headed to the dumpster at the school. 1000 pieces each.

Nice puzzles happystuff. The Friends image makes me miss Matthew Perry. He was the outstanding talent on that show.

He sure was. Such a sad loss.
1000 pieces is very challenging--my kids gave us a 500 pc for Christmas, which is our sweet spot for puzzles.
The wooden puzzle I bought for DH has very small pieces but we are starting it nontheless.

Good for you, Happy! I love making jigsaw puzzles, but it's a challenge to find a space to do so in our house, and it's pretty much going to be out of the question for the next couple of months.
True fact: I have never seen "Friends," and I had never heard of Matthew Perry until he died.

Rosa, I thought the Friends puzzle was a family photo made into a puzzle....My friend who is a superb puzzler, doing large puzzles with tiny pieces almost gave up on a puzzle of Van Gogh's sunflowers in a vase. Lots of yellow!! She kept at it, but nearly gave up.We do a few in the winter, mostly from the dollar store 350 or 500 pieces. They fit on the kitchen table.

Very nice picture, happystuff! I am working on a White Mountain one that has WWII posters--it's a thousand pieces and slow going as there are so many mini pictures within it.

That sounds pretty AND challenging, Tybee. Good luck and enjoy! Would love to see a picture when you are finished.
