View Full Version : Making something - my new desk

For the last year or so I've gradually been working from home more frequently. I travel a lot for work, don't really need to be at the office on a daily basis, and when I get home late in the evening from somewhere it's nice to be able to sleep in a bit and then just roll out of bed and start doing my meeting reports, expense reports, and the like. And my boss is 3,000 miles away, so he doesn't care where I work, as long as I get stuff done. Plus my company strongly encourages people to do this.

Up to this point I've been working at home with a computer on my lap and a stack of papers sitting on a futon next to me. It's been fine but I wanted something a bit more formal and ergonomic. Plus, I also wanted to try my hand at actually making something physical. So much of my life is spent online that I thought it would be rewarding to have an offline project with a tangible result.

And this is it: After $110 spent at home depot on supplies and about 10 hours of labor over this long weekend, I now have an official "work from home desk".

Thank you. I like mission style, and it went well with my limited set of tools and the fact that I haven't done any carpentry since 7th grade wood shop class... However, I must've shown potential back then. My sister still uses the butcher block cutting board, 35 years later!

Agree on loving the style (functional without a bunch of fluff). Great job.
Sense of satisfaction, getting it to fit in the spot one has, and learning/honing skills that can always come in handy, priceless.

Nice job and great use of your time & skills. I know exactly what you mean about taking such pleasure from creating something so tangible, as opposed to creating something in MS excel. When I work from home, I'm working at my kitchen table, so I am also a bit envious! :)

A feeling of accomplishment is a wonderful one so congratulations on your efforts. Looks really good. What is the colour of the stain?

It's dark cherry. I opted for water-based, all in one stain and polyurethane to keep the project as simple as possible. Two coats, seemed to be plenty.

The idea of a water-based with stain and polyurethane combined is new to me so will keep that in mind to investigate further. Thanks
