I haven't been around the forums lately, but I thought I would let anyone know who was following my earlier stories of the process, that my daughter received the Davis Scholarship to United World College - Adriatic. She'll be spending her junior and senior years of high school in Italy. The scholarship pays tuition, room, and board, but we have to get her there and back for Christmas and Summer. I'm fretting, as usual, between saving for airline tickets and for some much needed maintenance on the house, (rotting posts supporting the roofs of the front and rear patios). It will all work out all right though. We're very proud of her, though it's odd to think that she's only a few months away from no longer being a resident at home, and may never be back for more than a summer. Time moves on.

Congratulations to you both! That's quite an impressive achievement. My teen struggles to remember to hand in her homework :) I know you'll miss her like crazy, but what a marvelous opportunity.

Dry rot will always be with us. I feel your pain.

You and your wife obviously have provided the home and atmosphere that gave her wings. What an interesting life she will have.

Congratulations to you and to your daughter -- what a tremendous accomplishment! Plane tickets are expensive, but you'll know her travel dates well in advance (and there will likely be a little flexibility), which will give you plenty of time to look for good deals.

And good luck with the house maintenance....one of the on-going joys of home ownership.

Congratulations to your family on this wonderful achievement. It took all the family guiding guarding and supporting a very capable young woman who has bloomed.

How proud you must be. Good for her! And yes you must have given her the wings to soar.

Well done to your daughter. My daughter studied abroad for one year of her Honours degree. Learning about other cultures is always rewarding.

Congrats! Look at norgewian airlines for cheap fares. When we go to Europe that's what we do. She may have to change planes or changes airlines for part of the trip. For instance we take them to Norway and then take a different airline when we go to Poland. The planes are new and really nice.

what a great opportunity. I would have loved something like that at that age.

Congratulations to all! What a tremendous opportunity! I hope that, if you're interested, you find a way to get yourselves to Italy to visit. Being there will have a great impact on your daughter's life, no matter what happens there. Icelandair often has some good fares, as well.

My college recommends STA Travel (http://www.statravel.com/home.htm) for the best airfare for students on sty abroad programs.

Whoo hoo! Congratulations! Duino and the Adriatic campus are both beautiful -- we visited them on Choir Tour during one of the breaks my first year at Atlantic College.

If you are interested in travel hacking, consider applying for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card -- they have a 50k mileage bonus that gets you Ultimate Rewards points, which can be used to book travel at a discount (i.e. you don't need to meet the airline minimums for a full ticket). You do need to meet a minimum spend amount -- I think it is $3000 in three months. I can send you a referral if you want one -- PM me.

I probably should look into travel hacking. I have never paid much attention to points on my credit card because I try to use it so seldom, though airline tickets are something I purchase with it. Her first round of there and back came to roughly $1700. Currently, I don't even know how to use the points I have on the card for travel. I usually just get Amazon gift cards with it.I don't even know where to start with travel hacking.

Lots of people on the MMM forums have raved about this free course:

I plan to take it when my life settles down a bit (just back from China, where we were getting paperwork in order and listing our apartment for sale).
