Fishing season is going to really kick off in about a month. I can't wait! It simply cannot come soon enough!

I am ready to get a line in the water. :)

Anybody else looking forward to spring hobbies or activities?

My son lives and breathes Bass fishing, so I understand. I am outdoors all the time, I look forward to being there without the layers of snow clothes!Biking without my fingers freezing, what a great thought.

YES! Days are getting longer. DH has been helping "our" organic farm co-op get off the ground. Looking forward to building another raised bed and a permanent fire pit area this year. And seeing if our blueberries rebound from the assault by a lawn guy.

Winter just makes spring look so much better!

Turkey season. Locating a bird. Finding a tree. Calling him in. Maybe just watching him walk away.

I have a suburban pond that I can bike to with some decent bass, which is nice, but it will be early May for that. I'll be rototilling the garden in the next couple of weeks and then planting early greens. I'm looking forward to fresh local produce after a winter of bland stuff from Mexico, California, and greenhouses.

I haven't been cleared yet to walk the dogs, only the stupid recumbent bike to nowhere. But I see cardio in a few weeks and I am asking to be allowed to walk more as long as I am near home and people know to come find me if I don't come back. The dogs will be overjoyed even if we only go down the street.

at the end of season clearance, we bought two zero gravity loungers, I am ready to do my reading in one of those with the sun on my face.

Yes I love the 4 seasons. Winter make Spring sweeter, which makes summer wonderful:cool:,by the end of summer I am loving fall and the smells of it, then fall wears on and I want winter. Which starts the planning for spring all over again! I have a plan for Sunflowers this year, every type and size I can find will be planted in one garden. I started thinking of this last fall. Now if the chipmunks will stay out of the area!

Bass is an exciting fish! I wish him luck this season.

Biking with fingers at 98.6 degrees could be a welcomed change! haha

I will likely take my canoe out for first time this season tomorrow! Line in the water! Woo-hoo! :+1:

The boys both come home for spring break this weekend and it looks like we'll have some nice weather. I'm hoping they can take time to kayak with their mama. I'm ready for gliding across the water.
Playing in the dirt is also on the list. I didn't put the raised beds to bed properly last fall so I've got weeds to deal with.

Spring has sprung in Central Ohio. My gardening friends were out digging in the dirt this past Saturday. The parks are overflowing with pasty white walkers, joggers, and cyclists. And I went fishing both Sat and Sun!

Yesterday was my kind of weather -- rainy, rainy, rainy! I was the only one at the lakes fishing for most of the time. Spring -- not too cold and plenty of rain. Perfect!

So, did you catch any?

So, did you catch any?

Yup. 8 good-sized panfish and one accidental largemouth bass. It took me a while to figure out the strategy for the weather, water temp, locations, etc. But once I did, I was reeling them in. :)

Thanks for asking!

Hey all, I just wanted to re-up this thread since spring is here and we're likely taking part in our favorite spring time hobbies and activities.

Updates from anyone?

I had a great morning on a favorite trout stream yesterday. The geese and ducks serenaded while I cajoled two rainbows and a brown onto a hook. Something about the tranquility of a flowing stream, riffles, submerged tree limbs, stumps and deep holes where trout cruise unseen. The best part was looking into their eyes as I took out the hook and released them back to their underwater home. I have killed enough things in my lifetime. Pardons are in order.

Sounds pleasant. And I can respect that.

I harvested 10 crappies on Sunday and 9 bluegills. The limit is 10 of each fish per person. But I felt like I had enough. So I just went home.

Then last night I went fishing with a friend. We caught a total of 13 crappies and 5 bluegill. Again, we just felt like we had enough.

I can remember the first trout I ever caught, where I was standing, the kind of day it was. I became "hooked" on trout as it were. I was a teenager with one old rod and reel and a few poorly made dry flies. Over the years I acquired better equipment and one day I walked into a fly fishing shop in State College Pennsylvania and purchased my dream Orvis fly rod.

My career monopolized my life for 25 years and I just had little time to fish with raising a family. Someone stole my fly rod right out of my garage. It has only been this year that I have rediscovered my passion for trout fishing.

One of my favorite books is one not specifically about fishing but it certainly does take up a lot of the story. I think you'd appreciate it some. It is called, "The Earth Is Enough" by Harry Middleton. It is about growing up in a world of fly fishing,
Trout and old men. The book for me has many meanings only one of which is that life's true happiness is found in simple things that don't cost a lot of money. The earth and our relationship to it is worth discovering every day.

I volunteer with a local non-profit counting migrating raptors during the springtime. There is a a long ridge-line running along a north/south orientation that the raptors use for lift and navigation. The information goes into a large North American database with other hawk watch sites. It's not too far from my house and I go 2 or 3 days a week. There is a progression of species through the season that are an interesting timeline for the season, first some eagles and a few falcons, then the smaller accipiters like Cooper's Hawks, some Kestrels, and now the long distance migrators like Swainson's and Broad-winged. Red-tailed all spring. It's a pattern that has probably been going on for eons. I have been doing this for several years and the days can be long and cold, but sometimes fascinating.

Fishing season hasn't quite got going for me, but our local bass pond has been calling my name. I don't go trout fishing until summer, but something to look forward to. I have to use both hands to count the number of times I've seen A River Runs Through It and can sometimes think of a good day of fly fishing close to a religious experience. I don't care for trout as table fare and do catch and release, but a good fish fry with the warm water fishes is something to appreciate.

I catch some trout here, and they are yummy. But I must admit I am, at this point, a bait-fisherman and I favorite fish is crappie. :)

That book does look interesting. I may have to check it out!

Have you read The River Why by David James Duncan? It is one heck of a great book all about fishing but at the same time about so many other things -- environmental conservation, love, peace, justice, and compassion. There are some religious overtones but that did not bother me (which really says something!).

It is in my top ten favorite books.

Fishing is a good idea though we are far from the sea. By the way, I'm planning to visit our farm and do some gardening there. I also want a complete improvement of the area there. Perhaps a renovation soon.
