I wanted to wish all the mothers I have had conversations with here a wonderful day tomorrow. I am blessed to have my mother still with me. We had a nice simple lunch out at a small local diner and then went to a Brewsters Ice Cream stand and indulged. When I was a little guy she used to take my brother and I out for ice cream every once in awhile after we hit golf balls at the driving range or got in the pitching machines and hit baseballs. My mother is very tough and stubborn but she has a heart of gold. I hope you all have a nice simple day of peace.

Aww, thanks!
i won't get to see my mom (but she's flying in Thursday so we can celebrate late). But I get to go out to dinner at my favorite (simple, cheap, delicious and family friendly) place with dh, all three bio kids, dd1's fiancé, my heart daughter, and her son and her girlfriend.
I make my Mom and my sister a special dinner every year for Mother's Day. This year its in the style of an afternoon tea. Lots of work, but for the best moms I know. My Mom loves afternoon tea at the Floridian when she's in Disney World, so this year is my lame attempt at that.
thank you! we have friends coming from Burlington, VT. My mom is getting really set in her ways about not wanting gifts so I made a donation to one of her charities in her name. DD is supposed to come over. I don't even expect a "happy Mother's Day, " from my kids and I am resolved that that is fine.

Our 'mothering' Sunday was in Lent..... But I hope those mothers around the globe from other cultures have a happy day!
Thank you for the wishes! I had an odd Mother's Day gift today. My next door neighbor, a man in his late 70s, came over and wished me Happy Mother's Day and handed me a one hundred dollar bill. Not sure how to react as it was most unexpected.
Thank you :) My best Mother's day gift is seeing my 23 year daughter living a clean, sober and drug-free life, excelling in school and continuing to make strides in becoming a moral, conscientious adult. I really have no desire for physical "gifts" to commemorate this day. I got a verbal thank you from her. The mere fact she didn't die of a drug overdose like many of her past acquaintances is the best gift I have ever gotten :)
Thanks, Williamsmith. I had an early Mother's Day breakfast of French toast and coffee with my DS, DIL, and brother. Sat on the patio of the café/restaurant and enjoyed temperatures in the 70s, as well as a beautiful heartfelt Mother's Day card they gave me. Really a perfect day.
Your ice cream story reminds me of this one: when my son was 6 yrs. old I had just gotten divorced. I was a single parent and as many parents know, you parent for many years before your kids are old enough to really appreciate your efforts.
As it happened, later that year DS fell from a trampoline and cut his knee badly enough for a trip to the ER. While I was holding on to him so the doctor could stitch him up, I distracted him by having us both say all of the flavors of ice cream that we could think up. I also said we'd get an ice cream afterwards. As the doc was getting finished she looked over to me and said, "you're a good Mom." I was so very touched by this stranger giving me this compliment on my parenting that I remember it clearly to this day.
Point is: It's good to show appreciation to moms out there!
We are taking Mom to a gourmet Mexican buffet with another set of friends who are parents, grandparents and child. That way we will have a lot of conversation, good food and hopefully a lot of laughs. Every year Mother's day is our excuse to buy hanging planters for her patio. That way she can enjoy them all summer.
We are glad every day she lives here and not in New York 600 miles away.
We're taking our Moms out for brunch in two weeks. We learned by happenstance that we much prefer to go out on a different day when places are less crazy & crowded. We consider ourselves lucky that both our Moms are still alive and well, and are fond of each other as well as of us.
Yes, we would also like a different day since one of our important exercise classes will be missed. But this is the only time, other than Easter, that this place does a special buffet. Plus we are going when they first open and it is quiet.
We tried to go to one cafeteria on Thanksgiving and could not believe the line went around the building. Did not want to participate in that crowd.
We had an iris show today at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. The crowds were legion due to Mother's Day. I was there until 11:30 pm last night preparing my show entires. Went back at 7:30 am this morning.
I was rewarded by winning Best in Show in Horticulture and Best in Show in Design.yay! But let me say, to put it into context, that the number of exhibitors in Hort was only about 10 people and 70 entries. One thing was funny: I brought in a stem of an iris hybridized by a club member, and my stem beat his stem of the same cultivar. Haha.
When it comes to design, this is not a competitive show. Its the minor leagues, and I am moving into the major leagues with National Garden Club competitions.1590
Here is the "Queen's Table" whereball the sectiOn winners sit. My BIS entry is in the middle. frankly, it just was not anything special.

Here is my BIS in Design which looks remarkably like my Best in Show
Design from last year' iris show. Doh. Well, its a good formula for success: clean, simple materials in pleasing color combinations with iris arranged in a rhythmic line.As I said, the competition is rather weak in these iris shows.

This is my design which won Best Artistic Design in the show, one of the two top awards. I bought these weird copper cylinder thngs from Hobby Lobby and so far
Ive won two major awards in shows with them. I will use them again in June in a Garden Club show where the real competition takes place.
P.s. I dont know why these post sideways and upside down. i give up. If someone has an EASY fix, let me know.
No clue about the upside down or sideways, iris lily, but your irises and arrangements are worth turning my laptop around for. Thanks for posting them -- they are beautiful!
Lovely! I was happy to turn my Macbook around as well. I especially loved the middle one. I had no idea that you were that far ahead of southern Ontario's weather to have your lilies in bloom now.

Thnaks! It is interesting, agreed, to see what others do creatively.
Heres a couple more:
This one was fun, it made me laugh. The theme was "Walk Jog or Run, a design that indicates motion" so mine was about running on a round indoor track.

This table design was pretty much a "gimmee," a first place award that I didnt expect, and that was probably not merited. 1594 I like table designs because they allow me to feed my obsession with dinnerware and
I dont have to collect entire sets. One or two plates in a pattern is all
i need. I got these at Goodwill.

No no! Its iris season! :)Lilies will come later.

Well first I got flowers, and then I learned mom was hoping I'd cook for her but it wasn't communicated and other than buying flowers and doing weekly grocery shopping I was busy trying to do homework all day for some class I find badly taught and just plain hard. So then we planned to either go out to eat or get take out. We ended up getting Olive Garden take out. Now I don't actually dislike OG, I just think it's overpriced so I dislike paying for it. But what the hey I'm miss money bags so that was $50 (at least there was a $5 off coupon to bring it down to that!). It's ok, it wasn't a bad day, another day poorer but oh well.

I called my mom and let her talk my ear off for a while.
My sis (who is preggo) and BIL went to surprise visit my mom and let her talk their ears off for a while in person.
My dad said my mom was pretty happy with the situation.
I particularly like the ruffly puce and peach blooms, Iris Lily.

No, since the weather was warm she stood outside in the front yard. My mom probably sat on the picnic table out there, if there wasn't stuff piled on the seats of it.
This is fairly typical. We visit by standing outside. My sis was with the BIL for 11 years before he was allowed in the house. Then the first time he was allowed in he sat on the couch near the door. A cat (one of many) jumped up beside him and vomited. My mom sprayed the vomit with Windex, reportedly from my sis.
My sis was quite mortified with embarrassment.
Anyway, my sis and BIL are in agreement that my sis cannot go into "the shissvom" house while she is preggers and that the kid will never be allowed in.
Shissvom is what my sis and I call the combination of chit, p-ss, and vomit that is all over the house, stained in the carpets and furniture and such.

You know I starting to think I've been to your mothers house. Well I've been to plenty that sound just like it. Starting to understand you better.
Aww, thanks. We had a quiet Mother's day. Gardening and grilling. A perfect day.
My mother passed last summer so I really miss her this year. Harder for my sister who was a momma's girl all her life.
