If you wanted to drill two 4"x4" (really 3.5x3.5 inches) in order to run an 8" x3/8th" carriage bolt through to keep them together, how would you do it?
I had a look at DH's old Shopcraft table top drill press today and am missing a key to operate. It is so old that I am sure finding a manual and replacement key are a challenge if they even still exist. I had a look at some operating instructions online and decided that there has to be an easier way. I won't buy a drill press for making a twin rain barrel stand.

Any and all ideas appreciated.

I'd measure and mark the pieces, drill the first one with a hand drill of some sort (assuming you can drill in an roughly-straight line by hand), then fit the pieces together, check the mark on the second piece using the first piece as a guide/template, remark if necessary, then drill that one. I have a drill press, but I mostly use it for more precision work, especially with metals.

If I had a long drill bit, I might consider clamping the pieces together if perfect alignment is a requirement, but it doesn't sound like that's a big deal for what you are building.
