View Full Version : Simple Hair

I've almost always had long hair, color treated and highlighted, and these last couple of years I just find it annoying. My daily schedule is pretty active so most of the time it's up in a ponytail, which kind of defeats the purpose of long hair.

I'm really digging this cut on SJ:
http://www.fashiongonerogue.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Scarlett-Johnson-Short-Hair-Blonde-Highlights.jpg

I like the highlights for blending the gray and I love the super short back. I like the slightly-messy, wash and wear look. Sadly I do not look like SJ, so my concern is that I might look too masculine with such short hair. I go for a haircut next Monday and I'm trying to decide if I should go for it.

What's your idea of simple hair?

I just got mine cut- it's fine and straight. She's able to cut it so that it turns under a bit, parted in the middle, I use barrettes to keep it off my face. Wash in the morning, dries by itself, clip it back and I'm ready to go. color, I use Robert Craig in a light blonde that colors the gray to blonde. Not glamorous but neat and clean. I have a round face and it's cut about ear lobe length. then I let it grow to my shoulders, then go get it cut again.

Simple hair for me is a good cut that always looks good with a minimal amount of styling and fuss, from someone who knows my hair and my head shape and what will look good on me. I love longer hair, but it doesn't look good on me. Mine is currently jaw length in front with a shorter back. I only have to style the stuff I can see in front. :)

I have a great hairdresser currently- he won't do something that isn't going to work on you. He'll just nod at any pictures you bring in, and then ignore the picture and does what looks great on each person.

About 3 years ago, I got a pixie haircut and have never looked back. So easy, just wash and blow dry. I get a haircut once a month since my hair grows really fast and with such a short cut, it shows. No coloring my hair either.

A few years ago I was sick of my shoulder length hair and wanted something different. so he cut it chin length with the sides layered and it is very little work. I wash it and then once it air drys partway I just use a round brush to make it go under. With layers it has some wave so looks good. Most of the time I go to bed and wake up and it still looks good. It something is sticking up I wet it and dry it. About every 8 weeks cut & color for me. Easiest hair I have had.

How much time do you want to spend on your hair once it's washed and combed? That style will need some product and a blowdry and frequent color weave at 4-6w intervals which is costly.

If you don't want all of the above, decide what you do want. When I last changed styles, I told my stylist "I want 3minutes or less after I take the towel off my wet hair". After 12y I still have that style and still just 2-3minutes. I cut every 8-12weeks. All one length between my earlobe and top of shoulder from shortest in summer to longest in winter. midpoint is my favorite but since I don't want to cut every 6w I can't keep it right there.

My hair is very thick, very fine, grows way too fast and apparently in different directions (many cowlicks). I had something similar to the photo once and it was cute but grew out way too quickly so I was having to get it trimmed every 6 weeks to look good. I have found that I need the weight of a longer length to keep my particular hair manageable. Simple hair would be something I could wear down or up, perhaps some bangs or layers around the face. Collar bone length perhaps. Right now, mine is jaw length and I need to grow it out some.

lets see... I want hair that is wash and go with zero styling needed. No products or tools. I don't want to tie it up, clip it back, blow dry it, etc.

I don't mind if I have to have it cut and colored every month. Im not ready to go natural with the gray yet and I have to touch up the roots every 4 weeks anyway.

My hair is wavy, fine and grows kind of fast. Now that I'm older I find that it looks best in layers to provide some lift. I love the pixie cut but I don't think it suits my more rounded face. I thought the angular lines in the SJ might help with that.

ps... Would love it if you guys would post photos, I'm highly visual.

Florence... I thought a pixie would be wash and go. Do you blow dry for body? And do use any products?

i love pixies and wish I could wear them.

eta...it occurs to me that I have no idea how to style short hair and that what I really want is the convenience of a G.I. Jane cut.

I've had a pixie for years, way before they became popular again. There is a lot of maintenance involved, as in frequent trims. But it's definitely worth it. There are so many ways to cut it, with a layered or wedge back with a straight edge or wispy, above or below the ears, bangs or short wisps you push out of the way. Styling can be as simple as washing and air drying, or as complicated as mousse, gel and blow drying.

The picture you showed is nice, but I know that will require a bit of round brush skill to get the straightness and volume of the top. (I work in a salon and am constantly watching the stylists). Your wavy hair may or may not help you there.

I say got for that, but I'll bet you'll want to go shorter eventually. Short hair becomes a bit of an addiction----it's never short enough! Spice it up with highlights, or do demipermanent color in a slightly different shade, which will last about as long as your next haircut.

I have lots of super straight fine boring hair. I'd go bald if I could pull off the look, I think I have 80s hair Trauma so I keep it simple with an A-Line stacked in back style as short as they will cut it. Wash it, run a pick through it, and go. I don't own a hair dryer and haven't for decades!

Love that SJ cut! I wonder if it's as easy as it looks.

I haven't found "simple hair" yet. My hair is very thick but tends to be dry and frizzy. I've tried every anti-frizz agent known to man, and it would probably just take a little more attention than I'm willing to give it--i.e., washing and blow-drying it every day. It looks best when it's blown out by a pro, and I'm ALMOST at the point where I could be willing to go every couple of weeks at least for a blow-out. Back in the old days my grandmothers and aunts used to do their weekly trip to the salon and I'm thinking maybe I'll try it. My salon is a very cheap chain salon so it wouldn't set me back that much.

The problem is, when you get older, you have to pay attention to all the things you used to ignore, like clothes and hair, because your face no longer carries you. As for my hair color, I'm currently in that VERY awkward stage of growing out color to see how I would look 30-40% gray. I'd LOVE to be one of those glowing earth mothers with silver hair, but I'm highly doubtful that will be me. I may be buckling soon and going back to color. My DH tells me that I can't afford to look "Vermont granny" until I retire.

I may have the most simple hair ever. Last cut was 13 years ago. Natural length is midback. Wash, add some conditioner, brush and let dry. I wear it loose, or pony tail or braided. For fancy I twist it up in a figure 8 bun and clip it. Going grey quite happily. Dd1 has suggested that before her wedding I get someone (she volunteered her fiancé) to cut a straight line across the ends to minimize bun frizz. I may have dh do that.

I basically have the first cut you showed except that it is buzzed down on one side and longer on the other. I love it. I do spend a little bit of time and product on it because my hair is so fine it could be very flat, however the other day I was called in early and I put in some mousse, scrunched it up and it still looked good. There is a big difference between 10 minutes of some blow drying and a dab of product to get it with a polished look and really needing to do a full styling every day. Women's hair often needs a little bit of styling if you are looking for something really great looking, but the shorter styles are pretty quick.

I have a razor-cut crop, so the layers and my fringe are feathered. I wash it, towel dry, comb, run my fingers through it, and that's it! I'd been wearing my hair sort of midlength, and got really fed up with it. It's fine, soft, and self-willed, and only looked good for an hour or two after each cut. I thought the short crop might be harsh with a middle-aged face, but it's quite flattering.

Light natural curls, layers and mid-back length. I hate using a blow drier so I usually wash every other night. I add about 3 curls of the curling iron in the mornings and that's it.
Loved this SNL skit, went to church the next morning and DH and I had a hard time not laughing...there were a lot of moms with variations of this cut. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zh75XWRaugg

When I've had short hair, it was much more to take care of, the curls would always be going the wrong way, humidity frizzy, too much blow drying creating split ends, etc.

Long, straight, and uncolored, worn up in a twist and clipped. A variation on what women in my family have worn for generations. The simplest look ever.

I just had mine cut. It's a jaw length bob, and is short in the back. I'll probably let it grow to chin length, get a trim, and then let it grow long again.

I tried going grey, but I feel better when I use henna and brush the roots with Wow. This cut takes a little more maintenance. I have to wet it an blow dry it under. Oh well. I have an audition coming up, and I wanted a new hairstyle.

Love this cut! Lucky you :) I thought this would require some blow dry to get that nice smooth but full look. I guess that's the difference when you work with your hair's strengths. I might have to play around and find mine.

I too would go bald if I could pull it off.

This sounds great. I too have worried because the cuts I like are always shown on young women and I worry I'll come out looking like a middle-aged man instead of the cool look I see in the pictures! I'd love to see what your cut looks like, is there a photo online that's similar?

Yeah, I'm going to walk in the salon and tell them I want to look like Scarlett Johansenn and come out looking like one of the women in the video. But older.

Yup. I've had short hair twice in my whole life and it was a mistake the 1st time and an even bigger mistake the 2nd time. It just does not suit my face. I'd love to be able to wear those gamin pixie cuts. I think the first time I cut my hair short was after Mia Farrow chopped hers off in the 60s.

This is hilarious! And exactly what I'm afraid of. I'm going to show this to dh so he can get a good laugh. He's volunteered to give me the same cut I give him every 3 weeks - running the clippers all over his head with a #1 blade.

Now I'm thinking that with the Scarlett Johanssen cut I'm going to come out looking like Donald Trump. Cause of the bangs :(.

Now that Pony Mom has given visuals to my fear, I'm chickening out and I'm thinking of going with something in between like this:

http://www.hairfinder.com/celebrityhair/bridget-moynahan-shoulder-length-hairstyle.jpg

This is really similar to my hair texture and color. If I go with this, I can still wear it down during my workouts and gardening and just spend of a couple of minutes styling it when I want to. What I want to avoid is having to put it up every day. And the color upkeep will be easier.

I do want to go short at some point - I love the pixie cuts. I'll just have to get there a little bit slower than I thought.

This is similar to my cut and I can wear it messy or turned under but the length I have is shorter.

For several years I had a earlobe length bob, it was easy but when I hit my mid 50s I found it dragged my face downward. My silvery hair didn't help. I felt old and frumpy. Got talked into a pixie. I love it! I get compliments all the time and even find my silver highlights look great with it. I do find that I need a bit of makeup and some small earrings to to keep from looking too mannish, but adore my short hair. If I were braver I'd go even shorter!
