View Full Version : Shampoo for oily hair and sensitive scalp
My daughter is nearly 12, and her hair is starting to get oily. However, she's had a bad reaction to a clarifying shampoo for oily hair ( Suave).
I wash my hair with a bar of Castile soap and rinse with cider vinegar and rosemary oil; DD would like something more fun, I believe, than what her old hippy chick mom does.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
I use Mrs.. Myers lemon laundry detergent and rinse with vinegar. The laundry detergent comes in other scents, and I have used the dish detergent, too. I didn't like 7th generations detergent. It works on my tends to be oily hair and leaves no film at all.
I use this and you describe me. https://goo.gl/mCjNhv I can buy it local at our Co-Op. http://goo.gl/zb0uvn (smaller size)

neutrogena shampoo is good on oily hair
I've been using Liggett's shampoo bar. It's different than what most people use. Lathers really well and is great when followed by a vinegar rinse.

I had very oily hair as a teen. In fact, even in my 50s, it's still pretty oily. And I have sensitive skin. Mostly what I found was that the shampoos for oily hair didn't do any better at keeping my hair clean, and sometimes, there was a rebound effect where using the shampoo for a couple of weeks made my hair oilier. Daily shampooing was what worked. So I'd concentrate on finding a shampoo that doesn't irritate her scalp, and shampoo as often as necessary. And use as little hair product as possible. It seems to attract the oils in your hair and make it look even oilier.
Sometimes with frequent daily washing, the hair is stripped of all oil, so it makes more oil. Finding a sulphate-free shampoo and washing every 2 or 3 days may work after an adjustment period. She can wear her hair up (if long enough) on an oily day before washing that night.

I agree with daily shampooing sometimes contributing to the problem. For me, I give my hair a break once in a while and use dry shampoo (CVS brand in black and green can right next to the Tresemme expensive version). It gets rid of oil and adds volume, super easy to use
I also have oily scalp and shampoo my hair daily. The hairdresser says I shouldn't and I know it fades my hair color, but I don't like the feeling of going a day without washing. In the summer I'm very active and often shower and shampoo twice a day.
Interesting thing is that since I've been doing my shred exercising my hair doesn't need shampooing as often. Every time I exercise, which has been twice daily, I sweat a ton and I thought that would make my scalp even more oily. Instead it seems the sweat is pulling out the oil, or something. Because I've been going 2 days without shampoo, just rinsing in the shower. I don't know if that's temporary or not.
Thanks, all! The Nature's Gate worked!
