View Full Version : Universal Basic Income Vote
I see the Swiss voters defeated the proposal to provide all citizens a basic income pretty decisively. Apparently there was some concern over attracting large numbers of "benefit migrants".

On Mr. Mm forum there has been a lot of discussion about doing it here. A professor wrote an article about giving everyone over 21- 3k for health insurance and then 10k to live on. It would mainly be paid for by the Medicare and SS $. Even though the average senior gets about 14k in SS many get more and aren't going to be for that. Some of the $ would come from eliminating all the other social programs too. also I think people would be against healthy young people getting free $ at their elders expense.

I really have mixed feelings about UI. It would take away the stigma of social programs. Parents could decide to each work p.t. and be home more for their kids so I see lots of good points but just unsure how it would work and if it would leave the elderly impoverished.

This is part of yur question about how it would really work, but I want to know you response to this: when mommy or daddy blow the family income on drgs or alcohol, what does society do to address their hungry, unclothed children?
Also, why are the eldery an issue here?

IL: I thought of that believe me because at one point in time I as a SW. I saw stuff that would have you crying for days. AFter getting a MSW and only working 4 years in the field I couldn't do it anymore. Unless you had a couple of decades experience the only jobs were in child protection. A male SW in Milwaukee hung himself because there were no other jobs in the field, he had a family to support and he couldn't take it anymore. It was front page news about how people get so burned out. The kids in that situation would probably get taken away and put in foster care if reported.
