View Full Version : Finding my style at home...
I am somewhere between Texas hill country meets the beach meets urban living. I like grays, wood, white, a little black and metals, all mixed into the pot with a dash of turquoise.
Just like my closet, I am editing my house with this in mind. What do I love and how can I make it work? I have had to back up on a few paint colors on the wall and start fresh, but that is ok. It's about balance and finding what I love.
White paint has been my best friend in refreshing some of my furniture. It has really made a difference.
What you are describing is Wabi Sabi. It's Japanese philosophy and interior design. Look it up under images for Wabi Sabi and you just might like it! Let me know what you think.
Oh I like Sylvia!!! I like just saying WABI SABI!!! I makes me giggle :)
Good for you! I'm working on this myself. I have a bunch of furniture pieces I want to paint. I dislike brown and dark furniture but have a bunch of it - even some big clunky mission-style tables that I deeply regret buying 17 years ago. I also have a bunch of paint in pretty colors in storage, so this summer the two shall meet! I'm picturing lots of sea greens and blues, some white and a little magenta for pop.

Oh this sounds lovely Geila, especially the magenta! :)

I'm also working on my home environment. My colors are all over the place; your palette sounds soothing and easy to work with.
The challenge is to accommodate all of our different activities (art, music, dogs, yoga, computers, sports, and so on) without compromising a sense of serenity and freshness in the house.
I've painted some of my furniture the same creamy white as our woodwork. It makes bookcases and tables seem more like part of the architecture, less visual clutter.

So, yesterday I changed out my old drapes (I've been dragging them from house to house for 25 years.) My new ones are made of painters' drop cloths. The look fantastic! You would think they were linen. I used clip rings, but I put the clip rings about 5 inches from the top so you can't see them, and pinched the fabric to make a little pleat. The living room looks so much brighter and cleaner! The room just has one large window (13 feet long x 6 feet high - huge) so this made a big impact.
My old gold velvet curtains are going in my bedroom, where I currently just have blinds. They should help keep it cooler/warmer and keep it nice and dark when that's what I want.
Builder beige. That's our interior house paint. Our carpet is a grey blend burber. Our laminate flooring is nontoxic bamboo. We have big double pain windows with interior blinds and 2 sliders with interior shades. LOVE those. The remaining windows have honeycomb shades. (Nope can't stand drapes/curtains. not a 1 in the house).
We can put in any color anywhere in any form. All artwork works. All furniture works. We like what we like and don't care about "decorating".
oh, when I say artwork? Nearly everything in our home is made by us or family or friends or we bought it directly from the artist.
All that said, we got a wild hair about 5y ago. in our family room, we have 2 walls a darker orange and 2 walls a darker blue. we LOVE it. Not to mention orange and blue are our college colors and we do love our orange and blue but these are darker tones and very relaxing.

I think about painting an accent wall sometimes...
I had an orange bedroom in college for a while. I'm not big on color psychology, but that tangerine room really energized me!

Did you gain the college 20 that year as well? Orange colors induce hunger as well as give energy.

I did an awesome thing in my daughter's bedroom years ago. I painted 2 walls black and 2 walls gold, and then painted a wide trim at the top that was burgundy. It looked very Asian with matching bedding and all. I love accent walls when I can do them (renting now so not possible).

I use accent walls and love them. So in kitchen, LR, DR and guest bath the walls are cream white with accent walls green. In our MB and bath and my office one wall is maroon with the rest being the same cream white.
