I offered a training today on how to run camp that was more eco-friendly. I have a background in doing this and more schools in our district are supporting great work. We have recycling AND compost in the lunchroom and the kids are learning how to do this. Also my summer camp site has the new drinking fountains that are super easy to refill water bottles in (have you seen those, they have counters showing how many plastic bottles have been saved by refilling). I trained them on how to set up camp with things like extra time to refill bottles, games to teach how to sort trash and recycling, how to collect and store enough recycled materials for projects and local resources.

I asked for feedback at the end, what did you like, what would you change, and what you may use this summer at your camp. Everyone said they would not change anything! I am totally open to getting information so that I can adapt and the feedback was private so I trust that they were honest. I really like training staff, it is teaching after all, and so this was encouraging. For fall I have a lot of interest in doing this one again and also a mindfulness training. It certainly makes the stressful times easier when you get to do more of what you love, and I felt supported by my supervisors.

Good work, ZG! That sounds like it must have been very gratifying - and good for the planet too!

Yes, even my germ phobe staff got totally into the project where they made their own napkin rings and cloth napkins when I explained the system that lets everyone keep the same napkin until it needs to be washed. She was talking about tye dying fabric and making cloth napkins so the kids could take them home. 2 years ago I did a lot of eco things at camp very purposefully and 33% of the survey takers said they changed a behavior at home because of what the kids learned at camp. That to me is a very big deal (now remind me how I am lower performing than my peers, well you can't always be considered awesome)
