Here are some ideas I included in my summer staff training that I wanted to share

* cloth napkins and personalized rings, when you give each person a napkin ring with their name or a decoration on it then it is much easier to win over people to cloth napkins, they know that they are using their own and you can usually wash them once a week and be fine since cloth napkins are larger
* flannel hand towels, this is great for when you have a party and might use paper but also in shared work bathrooms, the yoga studio where I meditate has 6X6 pieces of flannel for drying your hands and a basket you can put the used ones in, If they are different colors and it is a longer event like the retreats I go on then people can re-use their drying towel (I use the same as others, your hands are clean after all)
* cloth 'paper towels' with flannel or microfiber cloth, I would make them 12X12 and have a basket or bucket for used ones, adding a couple to a load of laundry doesn't take any extra effort or water
* water refill stations at outdoor events instead of cases of water bottles, if you ask everyone to bring a bottle and set up those giant 5 gallon water jugs you can have water anywhere and not use any throw aways,

Just a couple ideas, and I think I am encouraging even more eco-friendly practices with adults!

I had forgotten about this post, now that camp is over I can report.

* I did not make the cloth 'paper towels', but I am making cloth baby wipes for my daughter
* my camp staff was enthusiastic and totally on board with our camp focus, they saved recycling and some parents brought things in so we did lots of recycle projects and had very little waste. next year I want to track our carbon footprint
* we were able to use the recycle and compost bins in the lunchroom all summer
* we only had 3 times I bought any water bottles or paper cups, the majority of kids kept track of their own water bottles which is a big deal!
* I am going into this school year using a lot less paper, the department is doing almost everything in google docs so you just print what you need of any form instead of printing 100 so you don't run out!
