View Full Version : Oil-Based Paints - advice needed

I have 2 metal side gates that need painting and I'm working with oil-based paints for the first time.

The weather has been pretty hot - in the 90's - with low humidity. I see that the paint takes 24-48 hours to dry and both gates (and both sides) will get some sun throughout the day. I can paint each coat when the gates are in the shade but they will all be exposed to the sun and heat later on. Is that ok for oil-based paints? Or will the sun or heat cause damage?

I did one light coat in a test spot and it did ok but am worried about the second and third coats when the paint will be thicker.

The worst problem is high humidity. Otherwise it should dry and the sun doesn't really hurt it at all. Wait several days between coats. It takes awhile for the oils to harden- at least that's what I've found when doing oil base on porch floors.

Thank you! This means the best time to paint is in the evening instead of trying to rush in the morning which works out much better for me. Appreciate it!
