Ok..so this really happened...

We had a meeting to work on some curriculum development for the next school year. It was a workshop..8 hours a day for 2 days. Leader said "Hey bring your favorite snack and we can share!" Great!! I went to the store, grabbed a mixture of items and brought them with me.

We just threw everything in the middle of one of the work tables and it was grab as needed. So someone bought these with them:

https://www.amazon.com/Mexican-Assortment-Lollipops-Assorted-Flavored/dp/B01C3LI52S/ref=sr_1_1?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1467473663&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=mexican+candy&psc=1

I had never tried these before so I thought why not? Well..let's just say I did not enjoy it..I gave it a college try...I did not like it but I discretely wrapped it up and threw it out.

Well the woman who brought it must have seen me. She made a big deal later on that some people are..wait for it..racist and bigots for making faces and being rude in throwing out her candy. Um? WAIT??? WHAT??? I didn't make a face..I just tried it..twice..put it in it's wrapper and while others were working, grabbed it, threw it out and went down the hall to fill my water bottle because I was out of water, not due to the dislike and taste in my mouth from the candy. I made no big deal or show. I came back and it was lunch time and I ate my lunch and the whole time she was glaring at me???? OK..whatever....

Is this what we have come too? She was going on and on because she is from Mexico that she is offended and "we" need culture training. UGH!!! Seriously?

oh dear, that sounds more like she needs some mindfulness training!

Usually in these situations everyone knows that person is out of line but it is pretty impossible to say anything when they start with their issue so we all try our best to let it pass. This is hopefully being handled by the workshop leader or organizer, unless you feel like using all sorts of communication skills to get through it with her. (I wouldn't try it)

Ugh, yeah, over-reaction much? (Her, not you, in case it's not blatantly obviously.) I was just talking about accidentally offending people, men, in that particular conversation. You just can't win with some people. It's too bad you had to experience that. Sure, I'd like people to enjoy things that I like or bring, or prepare, but if they don't, what does it matter?

This particular person constantly bashed everything about America that is wrong..and that we don't know how to be real teachers because we don't teach enough about the Mexican culture. She actually state the Mexican parents that come help out more and the American parents do nothing..ummm.yeah...ok...There have been several complaints against her professionalism. Hoping she is gone before the new year starts.

I smell an EEOC backed lawsuit.

The problem is she says this stuff in front of kids. She is a bilingual teacher and floats from classroom to classroom, as needed. No one wants her in their class but we are made to feel like it's our fault. So frustrating!!! :(

Hey, you tried the candy. If you really were a racist bigot (her words, not mine), then you wouldn't have even tried it.

You are allowed to not like specific food items. Whatever nationality/ethnicity they are from.

She was rude. You were not.

Sounds like SHE is creating a hostile work environment.

And which cultures other than her own is she conversant in? And attempt to teach in the classroom?

I wonder what she would have said to me? I don't eat candy.
