A new clever way to get kids outside - a video game where your avatar only moves when you do.
There are hundreds of kids (and older) running around playing this game. I do worry that someone will get hit by a car, but it's amazing how it's brought the kids outside.
It's been a day and I'm sick of my boyfriend playing it already. And envious because it won't work on my phone. However I'm sure the novelty will wear off.
Some poor kid was exploring and found a body. :0!

Oh great, another reason for kids to stare at their phone and miss out on anything else around them.

At my son't work where no phones are allowed during work time an announcement was made if you like playing this during work time, then at your next job at the mall you will be really good at it.

Have to beware: I heard a news segment about some baddies who somehow set it up so that they are luring unsuspecting players into an area and then jumping them. Not sure how they are accomplishing this technically, but it's good advice as always to stay out of dicey areas no matter how fun a game it is.
A friend was just saying that she was at dinner when a family of four (grandfather, mother, two kids) rushed by saying "It's a quarter of a mile this way!" In this case, at least, it seems to be a family bonding event. It sounds like good clean fun to me...

Not true. You can find other players and play interactively when you find them.
Some places, including certain cathedrals and the Holocaust Museum have banned play on their premises. You would think they wouldn't require a rule for that, but there you are.
Yeah, here a local police station reported people playing nearby their building in the middle of the night---not good, they said. Not sure why; I'd think that would be a safe place. Several places have asked people not to play in their vicinities in the middle of the night. I can understand that.

I heard the Vietnam War Memorial and several cemeteries have had to ask people to leave.
A (middle-aged) friend of mine is trying to figure out the rules as I type. She tells me she's spotted the quarry in her front yard, but is having trouble snaring it.

This is taking place in St. louis and perhpas in other cities.
A coworker and I were walking from a lunch meeting to another meeting yesterday and he managed to catch one on the street halfway between our appointments. It seems a little silly but I have to admit that it also looks kind of fun. I doubt that I'll download it because apparently the game sucks a lot of your information out of your phone, presumably to be sold to someone for advertising purposes.
Always a downside...
I'd love to find a game, VR or otherwise, that just let you explore your fantasy surroundings, solo, without having to vanquish some menace or other.
I just can't get into one more thing that means you have to stare at a phone. There's just too much else out there. It might be different if the phone were only used for this game, but it's used constantly for everything, instead of really seeing and feeling the world, and people around you.
I'm really surprised that some of you think it's so cool. And I'll bet that just like some other things.......(i.e. drones), soon there will be problems with using the app, and then there will have to be rules, after people are hurt or it's somehow misused by bad people.
But mostly..........it concerns me that we're just going deeper and deeper into staring at and depending on our phones, instead of being engaged in more "real" things out there.
We're moving toward transhumanism. Those smart watches don't have far to go to be small enough to be implanted.

I've seen some people posting pictures of local police posing with pokemons caught by their child. Seems like good PR building.
This has caused a stir in my neighborhood. I couldn't figure out why I was seeing strangers wander around on my street. It's popular with walkers and dog walkers, but this was different. I live near Cross St and that must be a destination point as I see people there looking at their device. It was a little creepy and ended up on the town's group page on FB trying to understand what's going on. I live in a small town so people see new things and talk.
I deleted Instagram and FB from my iPhone. I refuse to go on SnapChat and any new apps. It's just a trend and time waster. I tried Periscope and thought that was interesting, but there may be copyright issues and privacy concerns. I've seen folks Periscope out during concerts. One of them I saw later as I attended it. The theater operators clearly told the audience to not record or transmit any video from the concert hall. Nevertheless, fans sent out video that was recorded and played on social media. I have a question about legality and the rights of artists to their material.

I couldn't have said it better, Cathy!! I agree completely. And none of my children will be playing it -- they already enjoy playing in the fresh air outside. No way I'd ruin that experience for them!

But it is a real life social experience, as well as virtual. People gather round the park here and people with lots of points use lures so everyone can get some rare Pokemon.
And, they are getting some exercise outside, and adventuring into new places around town.
People (teens mostly, here) who are into this are the kind who would otherwise be scrolling through Tumble or Instagram, so I consider it a pretty cool thing.
