I thought this was an interesting if troubling phenomenon. Apparently people aboard crashing, burning aircraft cannot be persuaded to leave their carry-on luggage behind.

The solution? Cargo shorts! You can save your stuff and save your butt at the same time.

Here's another option http://www.jaktogo.com/ honestly I find cargo shorts much more appealing.

Looks like they'd be handy for shoplifting.

They might make TSA checkpoints more interesting.

Heck, I was yelling at the TV screen to "GET OFF THE PLANE". Talk about stupid people. It is beyond amazing that they got everyone off before the fire started blazing inside.

I can't believe that people tried to take their bags. I would definitely just be getting off. When I lived in KS I worked in a huge building that had 10 floors and I was on the 5th. when we had a bomb drill people would finish their phone conversations, get their purses, etc. Then OK City was bombed and everyone dropped what they were doing and got out. It as some moron's great idea to put all the state workers in a big city in one building downtown with an alley behind it and and an attached parking garage that was too unsafe to use but would make a great way for someone to plant a bomb. We never would have gotten out if it had been real. The stairway would get really crowded with all those people and our security guards were all about 70-80 years old. In the early 90's KS had the most militia groups in the country so yeah I felt really safe.

I understand why people are grabbing their luggage. They want to put their clothes back on, after stripping for the TSA.

I wonder if it's really greed or consumerism or just a lot of people's inability to process reality, even when the facts are staring them in the face, the reality here being you will die horribly in this burning plane if you don't get your butt on the chute. We have seen time and time again where folks just can't deal with the truth or reality. It's kind of like one of those videos where you see someone getting hit by a car and other cars just drive around or people keep walking by. I can't believe all those people are that cold or unfeeling. I think they just can't process the reality of the situation. Is it nature or nurture? Who knows. But it's not just an American thing, in case someone wants to jump on entitled (or whatever) Americans.

I have noticed, when you see one of these played out, it only takes one person to acknowledge the reality of the situation and the others will follow. Like someone falls and people step around until someone stops to help then more stop to help. Know what I mean?

The rule of thumb I go by is "Don't bring anything you can't afford to lose." Maybe that's because airlines have lost my luggage before. (It was later found and returned to me.)

Rumor was that one of the passengers on the "Miracle on the Hudson" commercial plane had asked the captain to go back inside and get her luggage and was upset when he refused. This while they were all standing on the wing or hanging on to the aircraft. So I think it's one of those "it's all about me" personalities who don't think the rules ever apply to them. Or, as Peggy says, they can't (or won't) process reality.

Exactly. However, it did cross my mind on one recent plane trip that I would love to snag my computer on the way out, just because of how difficult it would be if I were to lose all that data--even though I do have a recent back-up and am on the Cloud...

But everything else is completely replaceable, and I abide by Jane's rule. I don't bring anything I feel I have to lock up in room safes, or anything that would upset me to leave behind. Costume jewelry is my best friend.
