View Full Version : Electrolyte powder?
I sweat like no one else I've ever met. I was at physical therapy yesterday and mentioned that and my therapist mentioned several kinds of powdered electrolytes that you mix with water, and it replaces just more than salt and water. I guess they carry these at bike shops.
I don't live anywhere near the shops she mentioned, and was looking for something on Amazon, and decided to ask here if any of you have a brand that you really like.
Thanks!

This right here is probably the best thing for you.

Propel is found at Target/Walmart/Grocery stores. A powdered electrolyte drink that you just add water to. My husband drinks it here in Hawaii while training for ironman races. If its a super hot day and an extra long run/ride then he'll step up to the more intense kinds usually sold through triathlon/bike shops.
I know he likes Tailwind.
Something to consider is the amount of calories/sugar you want to consume with those electrolytes. Propel is zero cal, a lot of the fancy sports drinks like Tailwind have some kind of high calorie sweetener.
I think they are unnecessary for most people, unless they are engaged in extremely heavy activity.
And even then, you are probably better off eating a banana and a handful of salted nuts.
How much water do you consume in a day?
Brawndo!
I used to love that movie. Now it seems more like a documentary and not satire and it isn't funny anymore.
Yeah, I'm looking for something that has very little sugar in it.
I drink about a quart of water before going out to work, then several times in the next few hours outside I drink several more 12 oz (?) glasses full. Seems like I pee it out immediately though.....even though I've had enough salt.
I have switched to home-distilled water, rather than well or purified water from the store.....so maybe I've lost some minerals there.
I have to remind myself to drink more, since I don't seem to have the thirst sensation any more. I guess that can happen as you age.
I've made my own lytes drink......but it only has a little sugar/salt/water.....which doesn't replace other minerals.
I just can't believe how much I sweat. Even when I was thin and young, it just poured off me. I'm also on a little bit of an SSRI, which can make you sweat too. But geez.........I sure wish it would let up.
I've worked so hard and sweated so much in the past, that I have several "episodes" of confusion/dissociation.....which is pretty scary, so I don't want that to happen again.
So the only thing I can think is that I need to replenish what I'm losing a lot more. Another theory is that I might just be overheating, in which case I just need to take more breaks.
You're peeing it out because that's a whole lot of water and you probably don't need that much. My opinion ...

Pretty much nobody drinks enough water.
Last year my department, full of people with advanced medical training, and under permanent doctor's orders to *overhydrate* because of our work, was warned two weeks in advance that we would be tested with new gear that could determine, among other things, our hydration levels. 75% of us failed.
I have lost 8 pounds during a two hour response. That's a whole gallon of water...

Cathy, I have heard that drinking distilled water can cause serious mineral loss -- dangerous mineral loss, not just a bit. I would definitely check this out.
edited to add that this seems like Quite The Energetic Internet Debate, so you've likely already thought about it!
Tammy........I think that might be true if you have a normal system. Some of us have funky anatomy, or differences in bio-chemical things, or even conditions that might affect our use of water/salt in our bodies. But even if one's system was perfect, it would be highly unlikely that a person would need to pee, if they were getting rid of it in sweat.
Mary........I've heard that before and I was concerned about it before I even bought the home water distiller, but many places say that that's just not true......that we get most of our vitamins/minerals from the food we eat.
But I will research that again.
I have always sweat a lot. My doc says that's just how some people are. If we didn't, we couldn't regulate our internal temperature when we worked hard in the heat. But still, it's a pain in the butt! I need windshield wipers for my glasses! :~)

Coconut water is a great source of electrolytes, albeit somewhat expensive. You can just feel your body absorbing it.
When I feel dehydrated I find that adding a couple pinches of baking soda to my water helps me feel better. Another good drink when you're dry is a mixture of apple cider vinegar, honey, and water. About a teaspoon of ACV for a big glass, honey to taste (dissolve the honey is some warm water first.)
You might find that you absorb tepid water better ice cold.
If your water is highly chlorinated, you might want to get a water filter.
I'd also recommend taking magnesium supplements. Virtually no one gets enough from food; our soil is depleted and most water highly processed.
Increasing your fiber intake also helps to reduce dehydration.
I would say the Beachbody supplements are the best. Specifically hydro which is a hydrating supplement to help replenish electrolytes and keep your workouts going longer. Hydration is key to a workout so if this can help you, you will get more out of you workout. I hope this helps you!!

I have saltstick caps - I think they help, I tend to take them if I expect to be sweating a lot. I've also taken to salting my water a bit - I generally don't eat processed foods or salt my food much if it all. I've been wondering if I'm getting enough sodium, the extra seems to help.
I've also found that I'm not a camel :-) I'm more like a small cup. Tanking up on water doesn't help, I just pee it out and start dehydrating again. Much more frequent, smaller drinks seem to work much better.

That explains some of what I was getting at about the dangers of too much water, as well as the overdone requirements to drink large amounts to stay healthy.
I take a powdered Vitamin C Supplement with trace electrolytes. Here's the link to the site for Emergen-C with product listing. http://www.emergenc.com/ The powder dissolves in water so it is absorbed quickly. I can remember a bad winter with many snow storms weekly, I got very fatigued after shoveling one day and felt dizzy. I thought I might have overdone it physically and drank one of these. I felt better right away.
When I was in menopause and had night sweats, I took one of these every morning to replace what may have been sweated out.
Sparkling Mineral Water like Perrier or San Pellegrino also have trace minerals and salts. They are really refreshing with a meal at the end of the day.
Both are available at most grocery stores.
