As you know, I signed up for a few social work classes.

Today was my first day and first class. We did not make it through one class without a discussion of the problematic nature of white male privilege.

Are you attending these classes simply to enjoy the guilt rush or will they be useful in a future job you hate?

Answer to your first question: No, they were upset that white men had created so many theories of human development.

Answer to second question: I am hoping to use this as a pathway to a whole new career, something I might like more and feel is meaningful.

I suggest you talk to some veteran social workers before you make much more of an investment of time and money. That has to be one of the most frustrating and ill-paid--and sometimes dangerous--jobs on the planet. But who knows--it might be the perfect fit for you. Just do your homework. Me, I'd take the library.

You know every discipline has topics you must expect. Just to point out that getting a minor in philosophy back in my generation meant that I read exclusively male philosophers. My poetry class professor was forced to put in one female poet but explained that by definition a woman could not be a poet (something about our hormones?). It was simply the curriculum. I did my best to learn and also pay attention to maintaining my own understanding while still delivering coherent, on topic, papers.

Now there are other topics in the curriculum and so for anything social services, educational, psychology, etc. focused you will be dealing with topics of white male, cis-gender, able-bodied, and much more privilege. Also a serious questioning of all types of theories of human development. So I hope you enjoy the course, it is an awesome perk of the job to take courses. I have wanted to move more towards data science and I don't have a way to make that happen.

I was not complaining. I was just explaining what happened to provide an opportunity for interesting discussion.

That's great. Is this the first step toward a credential, or a toe-in-the-water sort of thing?

I will say that I'm glad that I tended to study fields where the quality of the thought rather than the pedigree of the thinker was the relevant issue.

Oh okay, hard to tell on-line sometimes.

Toe-in-the-water. Well, three classes is more like both feet in the water but I am not diving in just yet...
