View Full Version : Simple Living Book Club?
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing an online book discussion club. We could do a poll on what book people would want to read and talk about and then we could do a chapter a week or something along those lines. I'd be happy to moderate it, or we could take turns.
My first thought was that we could maybe go back to our roots and do YMOYL as a start. We originally came together because of that book, so that would be a fitting start. Or we could do something else.
Any thoughts?
You could count me in on that--and I agree about yMOL.
Another great book to discuss would be the Janet Luhrs book on simple living--just found another copy at a library book sale and would love to revisit it, 17 years later. It was a great book, too.
I'd be in, YMOYL sounds like a good first choice

I'd be interested. I haven't actually read YMOYL - wasn't aware that was what initiated this forum, I just googled 'simple living forum' to find people like me!
I read it when I was a newlywed in '94. I think it bears repeating!
glad you found us, greenclaire

Maybe. I would, per my usual reading habit, skip throguh much of it, but I suppose it may be time for me to review YMOYL.
For those who may not know, it is the title by Joe Dominquez and Vicki
robin. i say that because there is another book out there with the same title.
YMOYL=Your Money Or Your Life
It's one of the few books I still own, so a good choice for me. Also your thread gave me the idea of doing a YMOYL discussion group in real life, once I'm more settled.
I'm interested too. YMOYL would be a great place to start.

I'm definitely interested! It's been years since I last read it.
OK, cool! So how would you like to proceed? I'm not sure how many of us have a copy--I know it was re-issued, but my copy is the original. Do any of you know if the new version is substantially different than the original? It probably won't matter, though, because I'm sure the steps are basically the same.
Should we set a date of September 15 to acquire the book and read the first chapter? Again, I'm happy to kick this off--if anyone else would like to co-moderate particular chapters or just in general, let me know! Is a week per chapter too much?
Week per chapter sounds great, with you moderating (thank you) and start Sept 15, really excited about this project!

And I like the idea of the Janet Luhrs book on deck! I actually never read it, but I know it's a simple living classic.
I'm in. I've never read it.

It doesn't seem to exist in my local library so have ordered the kindle version. Looking forward to it.

Great!! So happy you're joining!!
I have toyed several times with joining a book club but each time that I checked the books that each group were or had read over the past year were so dark and depressing that I declined the invites. I find that addressing the tragedies in the world right now are enough for me to deal with that I don't need to add some dark fiction to the mix. Others find them satisfying.
YMOYL sounds very good as does Janet's book, both of which I have read but would love seeing them discussed.
I think it's mostly the investing chapter that is different. I have the newer version; haven't compared them side-by-side.
Sept 15 is good for me.
I'm interested. Great idea!
September 15th is good. Thanks for organizing this!
Hi Catherine, Count me in please. I just ordered this from my local library, so it should arrive in a few days or so. Is the book club here or elsewhere on-line?
I promise I am a faithful reader and am usually prepared. The library has a CD version of the book which I almost checked out instead. This might be good morning drive time listening, but I don't know if the audio is different from the text. Both are the latest version.
:)

I'm in too and Sept 15 is great. Looking forward to it!
I'd enjoy that.
I've bought YMOYL twice and never finished the book before loaning it out and not getting it back. May need to check some local thrift shops to see if I can find a thirds a charm copy.
if the audio says unabridged, it will be the same. My library writes that online right next to the title. I think if would be good drive time reading esp if read by the authors
I guess I sent mine to the Goodwill but I have ordered one from Amazon for 4 dollars, needless to say it's the old version.
I look forward to hearing from the new version people as to the changes in the editions!
