I hadn't heard of Colleen Stan but Lifetime is going to show a movie about her.

Wikipedia has a great write-up about her.

I don't know how she survived.

There are a lot of survival stories out there (the book thread I mentioned finishing Unbroken). Not everyone will have it in them, but it is an amazing ability.
