I am actively coddleing Daddy Long Legs spiders now. Not that I am contemplating it, but now I cant have someone come into my house and clean because they would sweep away all of the webs. One DLL spider was living under our microwave shelf, now he has a partner.
Just now, while I am writing this, a tiny Daddy Long Legs crawled on me.
Am I a freak for not being skeeved out about them? DH is ok with them hanging out around here. It is the time of year when spiders of all types are obvious.
i havent seen any of the big black and yellow garden spiders and their fabulous webs, but hope to see some soon. those guys are not invited into my house, however.
Ha--that's my excuse, too! But I have no problem with spiders; sometimes I escort them outside, sometimes I move them. Flies annoy me, and bees make me nervous, so I hunt those down with a jar and a piece of cardstock and out they go. We don't have a lot of poisonous bugs, I've never been stung, and I have no use for household poisons. My house is generally a terrarium. :laff:

I'm fine with spiders but my daughter is terrified. Her phobia is actually getting quite bad to the point she's nervous going to the bathroom on her own at the moment as it's 'spider season'. She's only 7 but I can't work out why she's so scared, I've never been nervous around them so it isn't a learned behaviour from me, unless it has come from school of course. Any suggestions on how to tackle it are very welcome! I've tried teaching her about them so she knows they aren't deathly here, we've tried looking at photos, videos etc together and she's fine with those but real life arachnids are another matter.
I was just thinking about this yesterday, how we had DLL in our house growing up and no one ever thought anything of it, and wondering whether we just had a dirty house!
I was always told they were good for the environment and kind of cute.
Mice creep me out, however.
My Irish realtor told me that if you had spiders in a house, it was a sign you did not have mold, that it was kind of a good thing...

Hahaha! I love this. I actually walked around a spider hanging from my ceiling this morning so as not to disturb it. I tell the kids that we like spiders b/c they eat the bugs!
Doesn't stop me from having someone come clean my house. The spiders work around the cleaning lady. Best of all possible worlds.
I rescue them and take them outside where possible protecting them. It is amazing to me that while I may know a great deal about a lot of life, I actually know very little about the bug world. I study the bug book seeing Star Wars characters in the different shapes that bugs come in. Wonder if that is where the creators got their inspiration?:laff:
With the brown recluse...it's total warfare.
There was a giant black spider in the closet the other. I just turned out the light and closed the door.
I like the web builders in the fall too. We usually go on several guided night hikes at the state park down the road just to observe the webbed wonders.
