Posted this and then decided it had too much personal information.

my dad is on his way to try to rescue my uncle from himself.

I'm really sad. Encouragement and prayers welcome.

The path of the alcoholic is their own. People can maybe facilitate drinking by enabling but no one can MAKE an alcoholic stop drinking. They must make that choice for themselves. Any alcoholic will tell you that.

I watched Elizabeth Vargas on 20/20 Friday night talking about her struggles with alcoholism and her "bottom" was when she went on a bender on her son's 8th birthday. I loved this quote: "I'm a mother. I would take a bullet for my children in a nanosecond. But I couldn't stop drinking for them."

How powerful is that? Encourage your mom to go to Al-Anon or if there are none near you, direct her to soberrecovery.com, where they have a Friends and Family Forum in the discussion boards. There is a TON of information and insight there.

It is heartbreaking and it's an ugly disease. I hate it.

I wish your family well.

I have best wishes for your family. This is in my family and the threat never goes away. My husband has been my beneficiary on life insurance and bank accts. Because of this disease I can no longer trust him.
Going to put my children on as co-beneficiaries if possible this week. Sad, but true.

Another here who can empathise with your family. I grew up with an alcoholic mother and she's still got it now, anyday I expect a phonecall to say she's ended up in hospital some where or other.

I know you can't "fix" an alcoholic, but right now, he probably needs to be in a hospital.

death "cured" my grandfather, so it's not like we haven't seen this movie, but it doesn't stop us from wanting a different ending.

God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can,and the wisdom to know the difference
