View Full Version : Which doctor?

I have 2 sebaceous cysts on my scalp that I'd like removed. Question is........which doctor? ........dermatologist or surgeon?

I have both and would trust them both, but I'm wondering if one would be better. I wonder if the dermatologist would be more careful not to remove much hair.......but then the
surgeon might do a better job getting the roots of the cysts?

Any experience?

If your derm does surgical procedures, I'd go with the derm.

Go with the doc who films it for Youtube. Removal of sebaceous cysts, pore of winer blackheads, etc are very popular Youtube subjects. Not joking, look it up. Put your cyst in the spotlight!

I had to look that up. I started with port wine. Nothing there. I finally found "pore of Winer." Some kind of hair follicle anomaly. Not for snack time viewing.

Ah yes! I corrected the spelling in my post.

Dr. Sandra Lee, dermatologist, has a big following.

I'd go with whichever one does more of them, which kind of sounds like the dermatologist. Unless you have some reason to believe it is not routine?

Yeah, I'm leaning more towards the dermatologist too.
Thanks everyone.

I would lean towards the derm but would ask, "have you done a lot of these?", that sort of thing

Threads like this make me realise just how different the UK and US healthcare systems are. If I had one I'd go to my GP (local general practitioner), they'd assess it and refer me to a hospital consultant who specialised in them. The idea you have to find your own dermatologist / surgeon / gynaecologist / cardiologist /........any other --ologist is so odd to me!

sometimes it's like that here, the primary controls all the referrals to specialists, it depends on your type of insurance

I'm actually voting for the surgeon. I had a friend who had these in his family, but it turned out his was more serious. So, as a precaution, I'd go with the medical professional who would also know if there's anything else potentially involved.

and some people would find it an advantage to be able to shop for specialists outside of a system that dictates not only which kind of Specialist, but WHO you see. Choice. options. Usually a GOOD thing.

It is wise here to ask around for the most competent profssionals and then hope that they accept your insurance.

For the OP's problem which seems not life threatening, though, I might simply accept my GP's word.

You actually do have some choice here too if you want it. You have a right to choose which hospital you go to if you need treatment and if you really want to you can choose the specific hospital doctor. In reality though people don't and will just go to who their GP refers too. Of course we don't have insurance issues or price as everything is covered on the NHS.

TMS........lol! That's what I was thinking when I first titled my post!
But I have to say.......sometimes going to a witch doctor might work even better than some of the docs I've gone to! :~)
