Just heard there is a new book called Irena's Children that I must read as soon as my library gets it. I am sure this is a great topic for a movie too. It is about Irena Sendler who was a social worker in Poland during the holocaust. She had to visit the Jewish ghettos but convinced families to sign over their children to her. The children were taken to safe places such as convents in order to survive. She and other social workers managed to save over 2,500 Jewish children this way. They made lists of the children's old names and new names and buried the information in jars in secret locations to later help with reuniting families. Of course, many of the parents died and the children were raised in orphanages or by adoptive families. Sendler was eventually caught, tortured and sentenced to death but managed to escape execution. What an amazing person!
